As I already mentionned it here many times, when I saw the Shadows at the Paris Olympia in early 1961, Bruce was playing a Tele, while Hank had the first maple neck fiesta red Strat, and Jet had a sunburst PB.
I guess that Bruce's Tele might have been lended by Fender's importer in France for promotional reasons.
Hank and Bruce got their rosewood neck Strats from JMI around april 1961.

Bruce said he never played a Tele, but this video proves him wrong (so do my memories), I rather think he only never recorded with one.

I think Bruce used the Tele on Cliff's UK TV show also- I have a CD showing this.

He used a Jazzmaster either before or around the same time as the Tele, so maybe he had access to, or was loaned, or even owned both at some point. He certainly also had and used the Gretsch 6120 around that time too. Plus Gibson and Martin acoustics!! The lucky chap was spoiled for choice!

Either way, the guitars and bass all subsequently changed to red models , with Hank and Bruce's Strats and Jet's Precision bass matching , probably for presentation/appearance sake. Such things were considered important to the group's image then.

The Willy And The Hand Jive clip itself was from one of Cliff's ATV shows. The television studio set and the use of the AC30/4 amps indicate this.

Indeed, Bruce used his Gretsch 6120 (bought because of the Eddy Cochran connection) on a live TV show broadcast on New Year's Eve, 1960. He was, as you suggest, also using the Jazzmaster around 1960/1961. It was wielded during the Angus McBean photo-shoot which produced the cover shots for the "Me And My Shadows" LP (released October 1960) and the EP "The Shadows" (Mustang, etc), which was released in January 1961.

Don't know why Bruce didn't stick with a Telecaster with his tuning problems because they are the best Fender for staying in tune.

It's strange that some players seem to have tuning problems with their Strats. Mine stays in tune even with some hard trem action. I have more trouble with my Epi Sheraton. Now that is a swine!!

Cheers

The reason is simple : JMI gave him a Strat, not a Tele ! ;)

Presumably, it's the same Telecaster as featured on the first album cover, borrowed or otherwise!

Does anyone know which guitar Bruce is using during Round and Round in Summer Holiday?
It doesn't look like a fender!
