Disappointing result

Postby drakula63 » 26 Jun 2013, 10:34

OK, so it was voted for by readers but I just want to voice a certain amount of dismay at the list of the 25 Greatest Ever Rhythm Sections as featured in the latest edition (217) of Rhythm magazine.

Whilst I can’t reasonably argue with such inclusions as Keith Moon and John Entwistle, or John Bonham and John-Paul Jones, Bill Ward and Geezer Butler, or indeed Sting and Stewart Copeland, how on earth did Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr end up in the list at number nine??!!!! OK, they are famous but better than Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce? Really? Similarly, to put Neil Peart and Geddy Lee at number one (above, for example, Mitch Mitchell and Noel Redding) seems a mite generous!

My main gripe, however, is the complete non-appearance of Shadows legends Jet Harris and Tony Meehan. Have these people never listened to The Savage, for heaven’s sake? Or Apache, or FBI, Quartermasster’s Stores, or Jet Black?!! And what about the exemplary backing given to Sir Cliff on early songs as Nine Times out of Ten, Mean Streak, Dynamite or Willie and the Hand Jive. A serious and unforgivable omission in my opinion! They didn’t even feature in the list of ‘almost made the list but not quite’ compiled by Rhythm scribes. Where would most of the top ten have been without them? Come to think of it, surely some mention should also have been given to their successors Brian Bennett and John Rostill? No? Shameful. Absolutely shameful.

 :o :(

You will probably find that the magazine staff are all quite young and have never heard of the Shadows! Remember the 60s started with the Beatles and their use of Vox amplification!

Sadly, amongst many of the younger generation, the 'uncool' image still persists!

...And that would be the Vox AC30, which would not have existed in the first place had it not have been for the Shads... True?

Difficult to know what Vox would have done if....!

I wonder what the demographic profile is of Rhythm Magazine's readers, and indeed its journalists?

Difficult to know.

I love the story (told by Brian) that in 1978 - at the Cliff and Shads 20th anniversary reunions at the Palladium - John Bonham came to the stage door and said to Brian "YOU are the reason that I started to play the drums!" I'm sure it's true.

Typical really bad researched survey, It might be good to contact them and express your displeasure on our behalf. I recently contacted the "hall of fame" organisation to express my disbelief that the Shads had not been inducted..still awaiting a reply, no idea of rock n roll history these idiots

The Shadows are rarely given the standing they deserve.Harris and Meehan were an excellent rhythm section followed by Mr Bennett etc.Articles such as this are a waste of time as the writers don't do their homework.

The subscription for this magazine is around 8000 so not that big in the grand scheme of things

I guess the next thing will be journalists believing there was no real music before David Bowie, that will hack off the Beatles fans in the same way us Shads fans are hacked off with hearing how everything started with the beatles....
