The Shadows' "Shades Of Rock" in mono?

Postby iefje » 25 Jul 2013, 13:26

The Shadows' first stereo-only primary album (in the UK) was "Shades Of Rock" from 1970. I have seen a copy of an issue from Argentina on eBay once and the claim was that the sound mix was in mono. Does anyone know more about this?

Are these mono copies of the British, Hayes-pressed, album? And what, please, is the serial number?
The stereo version was serialised SCX 6420.

The reason I ask is that the UK release from 1970, the sleeve reverse of which can be seen here:

...contains the then-usual note to the effect that the disc can be played on either stereo or mono equipment. That notice was only placed on stereo records with no mono equivalent.

I doubt that EMI Hayes sent them a mono mix. The bet has to be that it is the stereo version summed to mono (stranger things have happened).

Perhaps EMI in Brazil just couldn't press stereo at the time, or maybe the general market there was for mono.

As a parallel example, EMI in India were releasing 78rpms well into the 1960s. Right up to Rhythm'N'Greens, if I recall correctly.

Hi Jim,
At least up to The War Lord (DB.7769) as I have a copy.
Best wishes,

Hi Paul,
Uploading an image with your posting is rather simple. Below the box where you enter your posting you have the 'Save', 'Preview' and 'Submit' buttons. Below those you have two tabs 'Options' and 'Upload attachment'. If you click 'Upload attachment' you can click onto 'Search' (or similar as I have the German expression for it), which will open the directory window of your computer. Select the image file (I found sizes between 600 and 800 pixels per side quite suitable) and then press the button 'Add the File'. You can add an comment to the file but this is optional.
Good success,
Ulrich

PS. I am still looking forward to a picture of the blue label of Hank's first solo album which you kindly offered quite some time ago.

It has happened with other releases from around this period. The singles "Slaughter On Tenth Avenue" (The Shadows)/"Midnight Cowboy" (Hank Marvin) and "The Joy Of Living Living" (Cliff & Hank)"/"Leave My Woman Alone" (Cliff Richard), "Boggatoo" (Hank Marvin), were among the first singles in the UK to be released in stereo, but were issued in mono in Australia and The Netherlands amongst others countries. My guess is that EMI UK didn't produce mono mixes for overseas issues, but the foreign record companies made a mixdown from stereo to mono for their issues of the singles.
