1978 and all that...

Postby drakula63 » 12 Aug 2013, 17:38

It appears to me that as BBC4 continue to repeat (selected) editions of Top of the Pops, we must now be approaching the point at which the Shadows made their triumphant return. If I remember correctly, it was December '78 that they first appeared on TOTP with 'Don't Cry For Me Argentina'.

I say, 'selected', because for obvious reasons I suspect that they are now thrown into difficulties with the editions presented by Jimmy Savile.

So, does anyone know for sure if the editions on which the Shads appeared, also with Cavatina and Riders in the Sky, were or were not introduced by Mr Savile. I would like to think that we'll be seeing them all again; but obviously perhaps not...

The "Pop Go The Sixties" special from 1969 was co-presented by Jimmy Savile. Also, I remember a clip of a young boy playing "Apache" in the "Jim'll Fix It" show, which also featured The Shadows.
About the appearance of "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" in "Top Of The Pops", I thought it was in January or February 1979.

...I could, of course, be wrong. But I am certain that I saw them on TOTP just before Christmas 1978. Oh well, we shall see... (Hopefully!)
