Did Hank ever use a Jazzmaster ?

I know we have had many debates over the years over what guitar was used on certain Shads tracks. A Gretsch for Nivram; which tracks were the Burns ones, & obviously he used acoustics on certain tracks. But, in the eartly years, when Bruce had that Jazzmaster, surely Hank must have been tempted to have a try with it ? If so, does anyone recognise a Jazzmaster signature on any of those early '60s tracks ?

Tony.

I think Andy is the expert here, although possibly this particular shade could produce a radically different sound!

I would not be at all surprised if Hank said to Bruce "can I have a go on your Jazzmaster please Bruce"?, so we can try some Hunters' tunes!

In fact Bruce sold his Jazzmaster to the Hunters' lead guitarist, Brian Parker. All three of the Hunters' singles may have been played on Bruce's old guitar, depending the date of the sale...

It's quite normal in almost every group I've been in that the guitarists 'have a go' on each others guitars for fun and to compare etc (in both groups that I play in at the moment, we all have a go on everything of each others- basses, guitars, even drums!)

Maybe Hank did try Bruce's Jazzmaster, but I would really like to know if he ever played Bruce's Telecaster (the one Bruce said he didn't have!)- especially as Hank got Cliff to get the Fender because he loved James Burton's playing and sound with Rick Nelson, and they had heard that James Burton played one- but they wrongly assumed he played the top line gold plated Strat , but they didn't realise that James in fact played a Tele.

I must admit that one of my favourite instrumentals of all the sixties was 'The Storm' by the Hunters. In fact, I named my first band 'The Stormriders' after that record. Of course, at the time, I had never seen a picture of the Hunters, & didn't realise that it might have been played on a Jazzmaster, let alone Bruce's old one. I would like to have heard a Shads version of the Storm. It was really good by the Hunters, but I'll bet the Shads would have been able to make a real superb version.

The showpiece of "The Storm" of course was use of the de Armond Tone Pedal. The only other band I saw using one of those was Tony Rivers & the Castaways.

You can watch the De Armond pedal being used on Robby Januarsa's version of "The Storm" here :

But no Jazzmaster in sight !

Well, that is a really well-played version of 'The Storm'. He's got it perfect.
