A book (fiction) with Shads' music!

Hello. It's been a while since I've posted here but I've been lurking for a long, long time and reading along with interest.

I'm a born-again Shads' fan (loved their music when I was a kid in the 1960s, rediscovered them again about 10 years ago, have loved their music once more ever since!)

I'm a writer, and about 8 years ago I wrote a screenplay called "Persistence of Memory" - about a young widow whose husband played in a Shads' tribute band. The heroine, Charlie, loves music by the Shadows - many tunes can be found on her iPhone. While she's researching her family tree, she accidentally ends up travelling back to 1825 England, where she encounters all manner of interesting people, including a bespectacled gardener whose last name is Rankin, who happens to overhear her playing "F.B.I." on the piano in her cousin's cottage!

I actually did end up sending the screenplay to the real Mr. Rankin (at his studio in Perth) and I think he was quite bemused with it, judging by the reply I got (yes I honestly did get a letter back from Hank :-)

I'm only mentioning it in case anyone worries about the appearance of Mr. Rankin in "Persistence of Memory", which I turned into a novel last year, and which has just now been published by Fable Press.

And I'm mentioning the novel to all of you because I know we all want to keep the Shads' music alive and relevant... and I think I've done it in a big way in the novel. "F.B.I." figures quite importantly in the storyline - and I managed to squeeze in a few more Shads' titles in the narrative - "Wonderful Land" and "Atlantis" both come to mind.

Anyway, thanks for the chance to brag a little, and I hope if anyone likes a good time travel story they give this one a go. It's also a historical romance so even if it's not a very "male" kind of book, it's worth a look because I do give the Shads the tip of the hat they deserve :)

You can read more about it here: http://www.winonakent.com
And you can buy it as an ebook or a paperback from amazon.co.uk

Thanks - and have fun :-)

Winona, that's an interesting coincidence. Author, Glen Peters has written a series of detective novels in which one of the protagonists is a Shadows' music fan. For the launch of his latest book, in June, this year, fellow guitarist Ken Gilbert and myself were booked to play Shadows' music throughout the event, and it went down well to a packed house.

Hi Winona

Here's another coincidence. I'm going away on holiday tomorrow and one of my last minute jobs today was to download a couple of books to read while I'm away.

Romantic/historical fiction isn't normally my cup of tea but I couldn't resist the Shads connection in yours so I've put it on my Kindle. It's got to be a bargain at only £2.62.

I look forward to reading it when I'm (fingers crossed) lazing in the sunshine!

Cheers.

Tony

That is interesting! Thanks for that... I've gone to look him up now. I feel I'm in excellent company :-)

And glad you and Ken had a good gig playing Shads' music.

Brilliant. Well done.

Quite a few years ago I came up with the idea of a science fiction novel set in Basingstoke. Yeah, I know. One of the main characters, who at the time was called Neil Stamp but who now isn't, was to be a fan of the Shads. At one point I think one of the other characters presents him with an old copy, on quad, of Marvin, Welch & Farrar's 'Second Opinion' to console him for some misfortune or other. I am still developing the idea so, who knows, maybe it'll happen one day. Basingstoke and the Shadows - oh and S.F. too - the perfect combination!!!

We must all strive to do our little bit. ;)

I don't have a Kindle or Kindle account, but my wife has downloaded that book so that I can read it on my iPad.

Ha! Love it :-)
I'm a great believer in putting lots of music into novels. There's music in films - why not fire up the readers' imaginations and give them a bit of a soundtrack while they're reading? And what better music to use than The Shadows?
Good luck with your idea - I hope it does happen one day!
