Duane's distinctive guitar sound sound on Because they're Young is his Danelectro six-string bass. He 'discovered ' the Danelectro just before recording his The Twangs The Thang' album and it's there in all its glory in tunes like Blueberry Hill.

Although it's not so easy to discern in mono, the stereo versions of Because They're Young (some released decades later) reveal and make it clear that Duane doesn't come in until 37 seconds into the recording.

According to Duane himself, though not necessarily to every internet source, the guitarists heard throughout the Hollywood-cut record are Barney Kessel and Howard Roberts. That includes those iconic chords in the intro and all those lower-string interjections. Some sources give different names for those sessionmen.

PS: I like that Fender Bullet guitar from about 1981. I wish I'd bought one at the time (and that I'd had the money).

Because they're Young follows in a long line of 'big horse' songs. There was Big Horse You're Mine (Mario Lanza), Big Horse Of Love (Billy Fury) and, of course, I Love You Big Horse (Jim Reeves) plus (I''ll get me coat) Maybe it's a Big Horse I'm a Londoner (cockney song)

Thanks, Norman and Gary. I feel that I'm following a great tradition, since The Shadows enjoyed 'playing about' with song titles, such as Genie With the Light Brown lamp, Rhythm and greens, Scotch On The Socks, etc
And then there was Hank's concert introduction to Man Of Misery.

Times have changed. We are no longer permitted to find such titles amusing; that would be a hate crime.

As Pilate might have said: I not only have a gwate fwend in Wome called Biggus Diccus, but also, my sister is called Arthur.

I've written one called 'All I Have To Do Is Drum.'

I make no apology.
