Effects on Hank's first solo album

Hi,
Can anybody tell me what effect Hank Marvin was using to get the sound that he achieved on his first solo album.
Typical tracks would be Born Free, Tokyo Guitar, Love and Occasional Rain.
It is a distorted sound but there appears to be more to it.
I assume these were all played on a Burns as well.
Regards
Dave

From memory, he played through a Leslie cabinet around that time, but not sure of other effects.

Yes, I suspect the Leslie answers this question

The same effect was used during a mid-section on the nominal Shadows release Slaughter On 10th Avenue and also on Cliff & Hank's Throw Down A Line, both also issued in 1969.

... and, yes, I believe he used the Burns Marvin throughout

Hi all
I have often wondered about the very same question. I understand the point about the Leslie set up. But there is something more than that going on throughout that LP. The Burns has a grand sound that was not recorded before on the Shadows LP's. I don't know whether it was a change in recording techniques but the guitar sound has a bit more bite to it. The sustain is also a bit better.
One might suggest that the amp was pushed to higher volumes thereby providing a bit more compression and sustain. But as far as I know the Shadows always recorded with their amplifiers at high volume. At least that is what I have been lead to believe from the folklore that I have gathered from this site.
So I don't actually know the answer to your question Dave. And I would sure like to know if anyone can hazard an informed guess.

Hi,
I do know the Jennings J40 amp was used for some tracks, this being basically a take on the ac30 , but solid state and with a switchable mid boost incorporated, the tracks that sound honky / middly are the j40
Phil.

Nearly sure I saw a photo of him from that era with a burns-baldwin fuzzaround pedal ????

Hi guys, thanks for the replies.
I'm pretty certain there is more than the Leslie.
It seems as if he is using some sort of pedal or pedals.
I thought it might be a distortion pedal + a compression pedal. I know he used a De Armond 610 tone and volume pedal as he showed me his pedal back in 1974 but there is something else as well to get that rolling distorted and sustain sound.
I want to try to recreate that sound in the band I'm in.
Cheers
Dave
