About twenty years ago, I got hold of the two major box sets from Bear Family Records, covering all his recordings from the Jamie and RCA labels.I'm fairly sure that the Bear Family CDx5 box set ("Twangin' From Phoenix To L.A.") contained Jamie masters - releases of the Jamie stuff here in the UK were on Decca's London American label. As capacious and well-filled as it was, that box-set stopped short of covering Duane's work for the RCA Victor label from mid-1962 onward (eg,
Dance With The Guitar Man).
RCA, of course, also had a UK release deal with Decca by the time that Duane was recording for them.
What a loss Duane's passing represents. He was certainly my first guitar hero, the 10-yr-old me mesmerised by the best guitar 45 of the 1960s:
Because They're Young /
Rebel Walk. I can't say I fully understood
Rebel Walk at the age of 10 (it's a fairly subtle and clever musical arrangement, whether it sounds like it or not), but that divine A-side was just captivating. The very first record I ever really liked and wanted to own.
I met Duane very briefly at winter NAMM in January 2012. He was signing giveaway photos at the Fender suite. Addressing him as Mr Eddy, I told him that I'd been a fan for over fifty years and of what a star role he and
Because They're Young had played in awakening my musical interests when I was ten. That photo he signed, plus a photo of me looking on while he signed it, are still treasured possessions.
I'd have uploaded a photo but the board quota has been reached (whatever that means). Here's a perfectly safe link to it:
