I think he is far more enthused and interested in playing his acoustic gypsy jazz material with his own group these days...

I don't think the 80s were a good time for melodies,It was just music of the day like every other decade,Hanks sound and technique from that era is still untouchable,The Together concerts with Cliff are a testament to this.

I was out in the back garden at one o'clock this morning throwing up on the grass. Too many Easter Eggs. Never, ever again.

The Doctor Who theme is one of the most famous TV themes ever, I would have thought, and I can't quite conceive of anyone not being familiar with it. Or at least having a passing acquaintance with it. It was composed by Ron Grainer, one of the masters of the art, but really put into its 'unearthly' original form by Delia Derbyshire - again, a relatively unsung genius who definitely pioneered electronic music. There have been many variations, too many for me to list, but by far the best were the original and the slight variation from the 1970s. The recent versions have been awful.

I look forward to hearing Hank's version.

Best Doctor Who...?

Tom Baker would agree with you Gary!

I'm inclined to say Tom Baker or Jon Pertwee. Many would say Patrick Troughton. And I would not disagree.

My favourite was Tom Baker too!
I haven't watched Dr Who for over 30 years but what it is now is nothing like what it was like in the 80's. The Doctors also seem to change quicker too. Think the current one is leaving soon.

He is. Peter Capaldi is leaving this year. I suspect his replacement will be KRIS MARSHALL. I thought he was going to get it a few years ago when either David Tennant or Matt Smith left.

I agree that the series is nowhere near as good as it was in 'my day'.

I have never used Spotify but I shall endeavour to do so!

And quite right too.

I'd also maybe like to hear Hank playing some bebop on an acoustic-electric (think Gibson ES175) with a piano / bass / drums trio. His solos on Nivram from the past twenty years or so show that he is a competent jazz guitarist in the mainstream (and I suspect that he was playing privately in that style for decades before that).

Funny you say that Jim, I've been wondering for a while whether Hank also enjoys the later electric guitar stuff that Django played between about 1945/6 and his death in 1953..Django's main interest during this time was US style bebop, and he never went back to his earlier style, he'd moved on...some of his live and recorded electric guitar stuff in that era quoted above is jaw dropping, even compared with his classic earlier acoustic gypsy jazz..

I had a dream last night - incredibly vivid - that I had gone back in time to 1977 and was in the rehearsal room as Hank and everyone else were running through their parts for The Hank Marvin Guitar Syndicate. For some reason the room ended up becoming crowded with people wanting to watch. Hank seemed in high spirits but a bit anxious as he addressed everyone and told them what he wanted. I remember Clem Cattini and Kevin Peek being there. Incredible dream. I remember feeling this urge to talk to Hank and one or two others to tell them what I knew about their future exploits. As usual, I woke up and the dream ended far too soon. It'll have faded from my memory soon too, but at least this way I can preserve it. I can only suppose that it was in some way brought on by some of the discussions here.
