Interesting thread!

I suppose audiences at live shows over time have an increasingly higher expectation of hearing music as it was recorded..in particular, where complex musical arrangements involving extra musicians and instruments were on the original recording..

It's always been somewhat like that I suppose, as past popular performers (instrumentalists and vocalists) commonly performed live with a full band and/or orchestra.

Smaller groups and bands often resulted and became the norm when the economic viability of touring costs, salaries etc and higher ticket prices necessary prohibited large numbers of players accompanying small groups or solo performers.

Since technology advanced sufficiently to permit such accompaniment to be relatively easily and cheaply used in lieu of many extra players, many people have embraced the practice- either partially or fully.

I know that many musicians are not in favour of using, say, backing tracks in live performances, probably because so many people have overused such aids and their performances are sometimes little more than a form of karaoke, more concerned with individual promotion, self indulgence and aggrandisement than genuine musical ability or talent..

Not looking for an argument here BTW...just thinking about the situation generally...I have my own opinions about the practice but I'll keep 'em to meself..! :D

Regarding Jean-Michel Jarre's music, I think it is obvious he uses pre-programmed rhythm tracks during live performances, because most of the original versions of his music contain drummachines as well. Regarding The Shadows' live version of "Crockett's Theme", the lead bass guitar sound is identical to the studio version. The studio version contains at least four guitar parts: electric lead guitar, electric lead bass guitar, electric harmony guitars and acoustic rhythm guitars. All can be heard on the live version. Obviously two have been played live: Hank's electric lead guitar and Bruce's acoustic rhythm guitar or maybe electric rhythm guitar.

I can remember being at a sound check in 1990 and Mike Warren ( sound engineer) gave me a quick rundown on the desk,He was playing the Reflection album through the p.a , I think it was a tape cassette through an adat, When they were playing "mountains" that night,Bruce's 301 stopped working, he looked backstage..nodded his head..and said "ahhh f*** it anyway".

You seem to forget that at the average gig the percentage of real musicians (in the audience I mean) is comparatively small. 99% of the general public know absolutely naff-all about music and therefore wouldn't have a clue which instruments were being played live, and which were supplied by a backing track.
