Bloody hell! Pepper is number 1 on the album charts!

Well, all I can say is, if you've not listened to the Sgt Pepper box set (the remix is OK but the bonus tracks are more of a draw), then you're missing a treat. It's getting more plays in this house than Without A Word ever will (of which no track has managed to last the full running time yet).

I think it says a lot about Without A Word that, even on a Shadows appreciation forum, a thread about its release garners more comments about the rerelease of a 50-year-old album by a different artist...but I'll leave my negativity there!

That's an interesting statement and i have noticed there hasn't been much talk on here since its release (there's quite a bit on the Facebook Shadows page).
I played it this morning once, i'll need a few more listens before i can get into it. Regarding Pepper, i won't be buying it as i can't afford the £100+ for the set and it was mixed in 1967 the way the Beatles intended it to sound, why tinker with 50 year old masters? Although the outtakes may be of interest.

Inclined to agree. Someone once said to me that the very best hi-fi amps only have two things on the front - an on/off switch and a volume control. Having never had an expensive amp I can't vouch for that. But the idea is sound (so to speak); who are WE to think that we can improve upon the sound (by virtue of treble, bass fiddling or graphic equalising) that was arrived at by the artists and producer. I once played Rockin' with Curly Leads through my friend's pretty decent amp (which, come think of it, was devoid of tone controls) and he said it was the best-sounding album he had ever heard. I couldn't possibly argue.

BTW, one of my other friends bought the new Hank album and reports that it's good. Well he enjoyed it anyway. I suspect that as it begins to arrive and people get the chance to play it, we may well hear more about it on here. I myself have not bought a new Hank album since 2000's 'Marvin at the Movies', so that's MY excuse!

I'm looking forward to getting my copy of Without a Word in the next day or two, hopefully.

The point of the 'remixed' Sergeant Peppers - as I understand it - is that the original recording "as the Beatles wanted it to be heard" was mixed in mono, which as late as 1967 was still perceived as the dominant medium. Much more time was given to the mono mix than the stereo, but of course all subsequent issues of the LP have been of the stereo. My copy of the LP is an original mono one and it sounds great and is quite different to the stereo in places.

Of course the new remixed Sergeant Peppers is bound to sell well and it's easy to be cynical and say it's a huge money-making ploy, but it does sound fantastic and I don't begrudge the £9.99 it cost me!

How? Not that I want to d/l Hank's album, which I have bought.

The only time I ever downloaded anything from Spotify (a deleted Caterina Valente album), I had to pay for it. It is part of their business model.
