Talking to Alan Tarney

Postby howarddobson » 02 Jul 2017, 13:17

Hello everyone

I managed to have a conversation with Alan Tarney last night after Cliff's concert at Greenwich. He's my favourite songwriter of all time and I was able to thank hIm for all the great songs he's written over the years - some of which of course became Shads or Hank instrumentals.

I told him I still play the Tarney Spencer band album Three's a Crowd in the car to work.

He seemed quite surprised to have a fan approach him after an outdoor concert. Lovely person to talk to though. I didn't get chance to ask any Shads-related questions.

I think Brian Bennett was there too but I couldn't find him.

Well done. I'd love to meet him and chat Shads with him. I imagine he has no idea how much his era with the Shads (1972-1976) is held in such high esteem. I am willing to bet that the same is true of John Farrar. It will never happen of course, but to see him (and John) back on stage with the Shadows for just one final gig would be amazing!

I would be surprised if Bruce wasn't there as well. I imagine these gigs will have been filmed for blu-ray/DVD release as I think he is doing two at that venue. If so... you might see yourself in the crowd!

Maybe Brian was at the bar...?

I'm hoping for Tarney Spencer Band - The Final Tour, Marvin Welch and Farrar - The Final Tour, and of course Cliff and The Shadows - The Zimmer Frame Tour (as Hank puts it)

Just noticed that, apparently, Saturday's concert was 'streamed' live over the internet in HD, all as part of the Greenwich Music Time festival.

You lucky chap! :D

I used to watch Alan playing bass and his brother Frank on rhythm/vocals (and Trevor Spencer on drums with my great hero Kevin Peek on lead) here in South Australia in the '60's- I later met and played with Frank in a pickup band years later...they are both nice blokes.
