Uncle Fiesta wrote:Matt is also correct when he says a decent arrangement is important. Good case in point: Ventures version of Perfidia - brilliant. Shadows version of Perfidia - abysmal.

I like both arrangements of the song. Actually, I think The Shadows have always been somewhat more versatile in their arrangements, as compared to The Ventures. Especially in the early days, The Ventures tended to reuse their 'Walk Don't Run' arrangement for a lot of songs. "Walk Don't Run", "Perfidia", "Lullaby Of The Leaves" and "Blue Moon" all sound alike in that respect, that's why they frequently put them together to form a medley.

I like The Ventures' and The Shadows' arrangements of Perfidia too. Does anyone remember at one of the Shadowmanias Bruce played a recording of a Shadows BBC session where they played Perfidia - but with a Ventures-like arrangement. I guess we're never likely to hear it again...

I don't know if the Beatles' version was ever recorded, but the Shadows playing it in the style of the Ventures is available here:

Notice that Bruce says he considers it to be "the definitive version," and that "we should have done it like this."

There are one or two like that, where I consider others to have done better versions than the Shads. I refer to the Eagles version of The Lonely Bull, the Fentones version of The Breeze And I, and there's another which has slipped my mind for the moment. (As you get older, the memory goes first - I forget who told me that.)

For a fine example of lyrical songs being turned into instrumentals try the new album "What's so funny about peace, love and Los Straitjackets", which is basically Los Straitjackets playing a load of Nick Lowe song.
it's absolutely marvellous and done with Nick Lowe's blessing.

I was only familiar with two of the songs on it, so "reverse-engineered" on Youtube and listened to the originals. I'm now a fan of Nick Lowe too...

Great album.
