George

PS Look forward to hearing your thoughts on the 13th Doctor over in the Lounge.

Sorry George, but extracurricular activity doesn't count! Otherwise each Doctor, by now, would have each had about 25 years-worth of adventures ! I genuinely don't believe that spin-offs (be they BBC or Virgin books, or Big Finish audios) can count as 'canon'.

P.S Sorry, but I won't be sharing my thoughts on the casting of Jodie Whittaker - not publicly and certainly not with my name attached.

HI

May I have my two penneth in this debate.

The Shadows did not break up on December 14th 1968. Bruce left and was presented with a clock on stage by the others and Cliff. I was at the final show and earlier in the day spoke with Hank backstage at the Palladium. He told me they were working on the TV Themes album and that would include Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. He also told me that Slaughter on 10th Avenue would be the new single, which actually took about 9 months to get out. It was sometime in January 1969, I think, that John and Brian went to Hank and told him it was not going to work. Also on this matter, John Rostill's last appearances with the Band were at the opening week of the Sheffield Fiesta Club in May/June 1970.

Incidentally when Slaughter came out I spoke to Hank at the Stockton Fiesta Club in December 1969 and he told me that he wasn't happy with it when it came out. His words to me were: "I liked it when we first recorded it but by the time it came out I felt it was another year out of date"

Regards

Stuart

Thanks. That is interesting stuff. Stories like this have great credence attached as they come from someone who was there at the time and obviously spoke to Hank. I think we need a Shadows film (drama) that draws from all these sources and puts it all onto the big screen.

Maybe i'm wrong but i'm sure i heard John Rostill wanted the Shadows to continue and it was Hank that decided it wasn't working and called it a day?
I'm sure i read that somewhere but can't remember where but if Hank told you personally i guess it must be true.
I wonder if Bruce still has that clock he was presented with?

Only one way to settle this...

I'm going to get in touch with 'John Titor', borrow his 'time machine' and go back to 1968 and find out. And while I'm at it, I'll see if I can talk them out of it... Whatever it is they're going to do...

Wish me luck.

In the sleeve notes to the 1998 EMI CD "Hank Marvin" (containing his first original album with ten bonus tracks), it says that Hank and Brian thought it wasn't going to work and that it would be better to split up, which was (quoted) "much to the chagrin of John Rostill".

...there are several instances recorded in Mike Read's book which suggest quite a serious personality clash between Hank and John which I would have thought would have precluded any full time commitment to being in a band together.

When Hank went solo and had Goodnight Dick out, there was an interview in the Melody Maker or NME where he said it was the 'others that came to me' and said it wouldn't work. They were asking if Hank could become a solo star. It's interesting but when the Shads worked at Bradford Lyceum Rainbow club, in July 1968, I went every night. Hank and John travelled together in the Volkswagen Mini Bus - the one the guitars were later stolen from- driven by David Bryce and Bruce and Brian travelled together in Bruce's Rolls. Hank and John were very chatty and stayed behind every night to chat, whereas Bruce and Brian used to get straight off after the gig still in their stage clothes. They were staying in Leeds at the Queens.

I have been away for a few days and have missed this topic ,but my understanding is that out of respect for John Rostill The Shadows have never employed a full time bass player,so in reality The Shadows are only a trio .I read in one of the music papers in 1968 that it was Brian Bennett who was going to leave but in the end Bruce did .So I would think that John Rostill was the longest serving bass player with The Shadows 1963 until 1970.

When the Shadows reformed in late 1973 they wanted John back in the band but he was under contract to Tom Jones till the end of the year, had he lived he may have went back but he was seriously considering emigrating to the US at the time.
