Martin's right - Quatermasster is correct as per the Shadows track as a nod to the tv series, but of course the tune is the old Quartermaster's Stores (...my eyes are dim, I cannot see....la,la,la...) :D
Add it to my thread on amusing Shads titles!

Thanks, Chas. Yes, someone else did confirm they used a Jazzmaster for that piece. We'll use one too, then, I suppose plugged into a Vox.

Best regards,

The answer is "yes, Cliff did play on Apache - as lead guitar! :)

Interesting to note the Telecaster that Bruce never played. And the three Vox amps.

Interesting that, playing Hank's guitar (34346) through Hank's amp/echo, his guitar sound is awful!

That's right David - it's a bit like motor racing, you can have a great car, but you also need the right driver! ;)

J35 or J200 on Apache?

Postby abstamaria » 31 May 2011, 05:41

I was reading Roberto Pistolesi's very entertaining book "That Sound" last night. He was a very dedicated man, and I am sorry he is no longer around. In the book, Roberto seems to suggest that Bruce used a J35 in the early years, rather than a J200. That might include rhythm for "Apache," but the picture that prompted this thread suggests a J200 was used. Is the present consensus that Bruce used a J200 for Apache?

According to what Bruce wrote in his book, he borrowed Cliff's J200 to record Apache.

I'm sure that Roberto did not suggest that the J35 was used on the classic instrumental recordings - it had already been established that Cliff's J-200 is the acoustic guitar on Apache, for instance.

However, Bruce certainly did possess a 1940s Gibson J-35 in the early 1960s. It was "used" in the film "The Young Ones" (it's on the cover) and there are contemporaneous photos of Bruce with that guitar in the recording studio from around then (and later), as well as appearances by that Gibson in several publicity shots from the Licorice Locking era. It seems that the two guitars (Bruce's J-35 and Cliff's J-200) may have been alternated in the studio for a couple of years from around 1961 (when it makes its first appearance in Shads photographs).

It may well have been Bruce's experience with the blonde round-shouldered jumbo J-35 that prompted the Shadows to obtain two cherry sunburst Gibson J-45s in about 1964/65, along with the deadnought shaped Gibson B-45 12-string in the same colour scheme. In essence, the main difference was the colour scheme and the shape of the scrathplate (though there may have been internal differences, the outside dimensions were the same as on the J-45/J-50).

Hope this helps,

J35 & J200

Postby abstamaria » 31 May 2011, 18:34

Thank you, Jim. That is very instructive. I was thrown off track by the chart on "Bruce's Gear," which has the J200 starting in 1962. For a while there, I thought we using the wrong acoustic guitar!

I enjoyed Roberto's book very much and read it in one sitting. I have to go over it more carefully now, as there is lot of information to absorb (e.g., overdubbing in TFYL), especially for me. Once again, thank you for sending it over.

Best,

Andy
