Kathy Kirby's Dance On!

Postby Martin Page » 16 Jan 2010, 11:45

I see that Kathy Kirby's Dance On! was played on Sounds Of The Sixties this morning. For those that want to listen, it's at 22:15 minutes on the BBC iPlayer: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/search/?q=sounds%20of%20the%20sixties

Regards, Martin.

Hi Martyn,

I must admit I don't like instrumental tunes that someone decided
would be better with vocals.

Imagine "Apache" with words, or has it already been vandalised in this way?

What a voice, and please forgive the bias but "they don't make em like that anymore".

Thanks for jogging the memory Martin.

Cheers

Hi Amanda,

"Apache" has been 'vandalised' with English / French /German vocals by Sonny James / Orlando / The Fellows.

Best wishes,

Yes Amanda. In Spain there was at least one vocal version of Apache. The singer was Jose Guardiola, a well known crooner in those days.

Amanda,

How about a compromise then -The Shads backing with Cilla Black doing the vocals? ;)

I may be wrong but I think Dance On was written as a vocal and the Shads turned it into an instrumental. I think I read somewhere that Bruce came across the music at the publishers and thought, that would make a great instrumental for us.

Correct.

The song was written by the vocal trio The Avons (Murtagh/Murtagh/Adams), and the song-writing credits are the same whether it is a vocal or an instrumental. The only additional credit (sometimes) is "Stellman" - that is, Marcel Stellman, a lyricist who specialised in writing translations between European languages (but was not an original contributor to the song).

I'm glad this thread has stimulated some replies.

Out of interest, do we know if Kathy's version is followed by an exclamation mark (!) as per The Shadows' version?

Martin.

Not sure about the excalmation mark - but I'm surprised "Our Kid" hasn't been on this thread yet with his usual quip about "Kathy Kirby's Greatest Hits".
It usually gets a response from blokes "of a certain age" ;) - including an ex-Mayor of The City Of Lincoln - when Pete introduces "Dance On!" in our Band's set!
