MikeAB wrote:'Can't Play Your Game' ranks with me as one of their worst ever tracks, indeed i don't think many compete with it for the bottom position, probably held tightly by Mrs Bell though.

Rest of the album good to excellent I think.

Can't Play Your Game would not have sounded out of place on "All Alone With Friends".

I preferred "Words And Music", though.

I don't know about that.

It was squarely within the pop mainstream of its time, in the wake of similar sounding number 1 hits for people like the Bee Gees.

Since it’s off the Guardian Angel topic, from which I wish to steer clear, I agree that Mrs Bell was absolutely right for its era. Maybe not right for fans of the original Shadows, but our heroes had to evolve. The performance, the harmonies and the writing point the way to Marvin, Welch and Farrar. The whole thing is a high quality record. Not liking it is another matter!

It's funny how often we come back to Dear Old Mrs Bell. I've always quite liked it since I bought the Somethin' Else LP - around 1978 - and agree with the above comments. I'd rather listen to DOMB than most of Guardian Angel. Which is probably more to do with preferring '60s music to '80s music... I prefer its original B-side - the magnificent Trying to Forget the One You Love, though! Great vocals from Hank on both songs!

Going by the positive comments on here, I'm sure GA is an album I'd listen to quite often - if I had it!

(Wouldn't listen to DOMB again if you paid me though.)

DOMB let down by the whole lyric (especially the Leslie Phillips quote) and certainly a daft choice of an A-side (same guy who chose Rhythm and Greens no doubt, still trying and failing to be 'in' ). The otherwise great Marmaduke (and his rhymed brother, the more properly named Luke) was also let down by some of the lyrics - Choo Choo train - such a shame.

Twilight Ranger wrote:I just listened to Guardian Angel. It's a CD I don't listen to as often as I listen to The Shadows' early sixties music, but that doesn't mean I don't like Guardian Angel. In fact, I enjoy every track on it, most of all How Do I Love Thee, The Saturday Western and Guardian Angel. To me it's totally unimportant whether a piece of music is The Shadows' original composition or a cover version of a well-known hit. All the tunes are molodic and the arrangements very musical and imaginative. I even like the vocal numbers even though for me The Shadows' singing never contained the inexplicable magic I find in The Everly Brothers, for instance.

There are Shadows albums I never listento, or rarely listen to, but Guardian Angel isn't one of them.

I digress briefly, Lassi, from the topic in hand to congratulate you on your men's ice hockey team's first ever Olympic gold medal! :)

Thank you, Bill. I wish it had been something to do with me. I did watch the match, which began at 6am Finnish time. It's been a Sunday filled with spectator sports. I'm just concluding it by watching the La Liga Basque derby Athletic Bilbao v Real Sociedad. No score at half time.
