Darren- welcome! Great that you could join us and great to hear that Ernie is well. He must be very proud of his guitar work on 'move it' - or maybe it was just another days' work?
All the best

I have asked this question before but no one seems to know.
Interesting that he is said to have joined the MN as an Engineer.
If he was a guitarist he would have been a Deck Officer    :o

Hi My name is Alex Paterson The reason for this communication a few years ago I purchased Earnie Shears 1951 Dangelico special.
I believe that he would like to know what happened to it and where this very special instrument ended up.
Does any one know where he lives , if so please let him know and to get in touch with me for a chat.

Hello, Alex, and welcome.

When I did that telephone interview with Ernie (was it really nineteen years ago?), the D'Angelico guitar was fresh in my mind because I'd recently seen a "Sing Something Simple" LP sleeve with that guitar in Ernie's hands.

I asked whether he still had it, but he said that he didn't and was using a Yamaha flat-top guitar for any work which required an acoustic. I didn't ask whether there was any regret at letting go of such a work of art as a D'Angelico...

Hello, Alex, and welcome.

You could send a PM via this site to fellow member Darren Shear, who is Ernie's grandson.

Message 21 above (sent on January 31st) will enable you to contact Darren by Personal Message.

Hope this helps.

Hi Darren, I hope you don't mind me contacting you about your grandfather Ernie. I trust that he is in good health. He is fondly remembered for his superb session work, particularly as he made the best sound on any British rock and roll song ever !
The discussion about his work on Cliff's 'Move It' came up in conversation between myself and former Shadows sound engineer Dick Plant today, the main point being Ernie's guitar on that session. I'd asked Dick if he had any experience with the Hofner President guitar as I wanted to see if I could get the same sound as Ernie did for a project that I'm working on which would mean going out and buying one. Dick came back to me after a while and told me that he had heard that Ernie's guitar wasn't a Hofner on that session, but in fact a Clifford Essex archtop with a Rhythm King pickup on a sliding rail. If that's the case I would be wasting my time and money, so I wonder if it was possible to ask him and clear it up. Don't worry if you can't help, but I figured it might be worth a try.

Kind regards
Dave Robinson
