Old Fart wrote:If Mr McCartney is so bothered, why doesn't HE buy it. He could afford it

He could have, if his divorce had not cost him 24.3 million pounds...

The first Cliff and The Shadows (then Drifters) album, Cliff, was recorded live there in February 1959.

The example of what happened to the original Cavern should be enough to persuade Westminster Council (the local authority) that No.3 Abbey Road is worth keeping in it's present form because of the value to generations hence. If not, then in 20 years time some nearby house in Abbey Road will be designated as the 'nearly original, well, the closest we could get, EMI Studios Heritage Showpiece' while No.3 is a block of (very expensive) flats.

When I was over in the USA three years ago, we visited the Sun Studios in Memphis and RCA Studio 'B' in Nashville which are constantly recieving visitors in droves. This is of course fuelled by the Elvis Presley connection, but Roy Orbison, The Everley Bros, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee as well as all the massive country artistes are added attractions, as they too worked in these places. The turnover must be really healthy and if Abbey Road was give the same presentation, it should be a gold mine with the foreign tourists that London attracts, given it's similar history. That said, I won't hold my breath.

I heard about this on Chris Evans this morning, I was in the car with the radio on while the lady from the National Trust was talking.

Check out their website.

There's a petition to check the interest. Btw, Cliff was mentioned during the interview, but not the Shads.

All the records on Chris Evans' show this morning were recorded at Abbey Road Studios. Chris even played Move It and didn't make the usual mistake of naming The Shadows as backing musicians. I thought Chris had refused to play Cliff records in the past.

I have fond memories of going to the studios after winning a competition for the best new group in Halifax judged by Sir Jimmy Saville. The first prize was a recording session at EMI studios in London. We travelled down to London St John's Wood in a ford thames van loaded with gear. I remember pulling up at Abbey road studios. I didn't really appreciate the future significance of recording at Abbey Road and in the famous studio 2 itself until after. When we went in I was amazed at the size and extent of the building. We were shown to the studio and got set up. As we were getting ready to record the engineer was telling us where the Beatles normally position themselves. Apparently, I was standing where John Lennon usually stands (I played rhythm in those days). I was blown away thinking 'this is where John Lennon stands' I was only about 16 at the time. After a period of doing one or two numbers, the swinging Blue Jeans came into the studio and asked if we could take a break while they recorded a couple of numbers. They had just flown in from Scotland and had very little time to lay down a few tracks. We obliged as they were very nice guys who we respected. We went to the famous cafe for a cup of coffee and we were again taken back as we realized that manfred man were in taking a break. We got talking to them and they were also very nice guys. Someone who worked in the studio told us that Bobby Vee was around and George Martin. After we returned they asked us our opinion of the track they had recorded and later it was released.
We recorded some standards and one or two numbers I had written. It wasn't until later we realized the standards we recorded were then recorded by several big names. It made us wonder if the engineers or someone in charge of the studio heard our recordings and thought 'That would make a good number for a famous star'. I can't remember now who recorded the numbers, but that is life!
I visited Abbey Road studios a couple of years ago and enquired if they had a record of our visit and possibly a recording we had made. Unfortunately, they didn't keep the recordings if they were not released, but if I rang the archives they might have a resord of our group visiting. I followed it up and hey presto we were listed.
The outside of the building appears to have changed very little from when we visited it in the Sixties but it brought a flood of happy memories back of the years I played with the group. It would be an awful shame to see the building change to other usage.

Often heard it said that the trick with traditions and matters of heritage etc is to study them carefully, then keep the 'flames' and throw away the 'ashes' -unfortunately it seems that most people in authority more often than not get it the other way around.......... ;)

Yes he can, pulp all his millions, make a papier mache coffin - good for the environment too!

Other than that the Jacksons could buy it and turn it in to Neverland UK!
