Sorry I haven't been around lately -- I'm up to my ears in work as this is the end of my annual contract period and I have to "burn up" all my resources. I just have time to pop in from time to time and have a look at what's going on.

Ecca, your new Gibson L5 guitar is one of the most breathtaking instruments I have ever seen. I can only imagine what it looks (and sounds) like live. And the wine red color is absolutely intoxicating!! :o :o :o I can hardly wait to hear you play it.

One question, have you considered fitting it with flatwounds to get a real vintage jazz sound?

Congratulations! I am sincerely happy for you. :)

I agree, the flatwounds sound and feel great on a jazz guitar. I had them on mine and loved them 8-)

I remember flatwounds from the sixties when they all we could get.
Dull and lifeless.
Sod that.

They are greatly improved now. I suppose it depends on what sound you want out of your Gibson or indeed what you want to play on it. Lots of jazz players like the flatwounds for the warm sound and not too much sustain. I too suffered the dull sounds of the sixties flatwounds doing Shads and other stuff and welcomed the nine guage strings that brought in the rock era. but they worked a treat on my seven-string I bought a few years ago 8-)
I'd never concider using them on my Squeir but I would for an archtop.
Each to their own I suppose.
You might also want to concider wearing shorts that are a better match to your guitar finish too ;)
These ones in the pic are even more dull than the flatwounds

I don't play jazzy and never bought the guitar to play jazzy, I bought it because it's fantastic.
