When I registered "Legend" originally, there was no charge,,, and it's hardly a king's ransom for such a facility, particularly as it's a once and for all charge.

The point has already been made, but it's worth reiterating, the whole purpose of registration is to deter others from using the name, and to put a stake in the ground as to your claim on the name.

And you can search for other bands using your projected name... good value, I'd say...(and it's by no means the only site which asks for a contribution...)

I agree that the charge is not much but I still cannot accept that they have any legal standing with regard to band names.

If they are just a list so that you can see if anyone else is going under the same name then that is well and good as long as they don't try to impose ruleswhich they are powerless to enforce.

If anyone would like to send me £5 I am happy to add your name to a list but you have to give me the money first before I will allow you to check if someone else has used the same name.

Issues of copyright (and who was first) are always fraught, but the fact remains that any evidence which helps you to establish that you used a name first is of value. So, for example, an entry on Bandreg is of value, as is a dated poster etc etc...

Interestingly, I have never paid a fee to this site, and I can log in and search without charge... so I'll happily check for members who don't want to pay the £7.84 to register.

(Your cheque is in the post Tom... )

So, we became 'Into the Shadows' and I thought I'd be smart and register a domain name for our website [when I design it...]

It hasn't stopped another un-related band using that name and advertising gigs on eBay!!!

Thats interesting George. The very first band I played in was called The Echoes in 63/64.

May not have been that far away from you(assuming you were near Glasgow at the time) but certainly a different band.

OK... here's a positive suggestion.

Suppose we create a forum for Shadows tribute bands to "register" their existence, tell us when they were formed, give some basic info about the band, and, because they will have to join the community, it will also give potential "bookers" a contact for the band...

We could even have a different "thread" for each country if that was thought to be helpful... and the cost would be zero...

Sorry, Hugh, I don't remember any band in the Glasgow area with that name in the 60s 8-(>

I suggested the Echoes when we started the band about ten years ago because it sounded quite retro and it was a kind of nod to the fascination some folks have with 'That sound'. It was also - I think - the name of Dusty Springfield's backing group in the 60s.

David's suggestion sounds interesting...

All a pointless exercise IMHO - hasn't stopped the US Band called 'The Shadows' in any way I've noticed.................... or 'The Strangers' in UK even though John Farrar's old band still exists elsewhere under that title.

I think this is an excellent idea, especially as this forum must include a large number of the existing band members and other people who know one or more of the bands. How about we start with a section on this site and see how it grows? I'm sure Shazam! details would be on it in a whisker!
