No hard feelings Tom! :D

One can say that although the recordings was´nt created by management in a correct way, the playing of some of the recordings are masterpeaces.

See, I love Hank's version of The Sound of Silence. It's a completely new arrangment with original ideas/sections and it's superbly executed. I play it at every performance and it always gets a huge response from the audience. IMO it's one of the best covers ever to be given the "Hank" treatment.

It just goes to show how varied our tastes can be.

I'm with you on that one Justin. I was disappointed when the Mastertrax CD didn't include the BT as I was looking forward to playing it. I'm very grateful to Didier Frechet for making the BT and Goran Tangring for putting it up on his web site. It was great fun to learn. There is a huge variety of technique in this one.

I often wonder if the Shadows cover albums were intended for a different audience to the original Shadows recordings. Were they likely to appeal more to the fans of the James Last orchestra , or did the record company believe that the original fans had just grown old ( and less discriminating). I remember a huge feeling of relief when the "Guardian Angel" album came out, my band had returned to form, sadly I was wrong. I have to admit that the later cover albums that I bought, have only been played 2 or 3 times, such was my disappointment. I would be interested to know , what you think of "Into the Light" this was Hank's first post Shadows album since the bitter break-up, it contains at least 9 covers out of 16 tracks. However I think that it's one of Hank's greatest albums. Over to you.....

My own take on the Shadows later albums in the 80's has always been that many of the selected tunes, although big hits for the original artistes, were often not strong enough melodies to reproduce as instrumental numbers. but were included because of their chart success. Many of them were dynamic vocal performances that didn't transfer to the guitar successfully. but the originals that were included on those albums were excellent choices.

I think 'Into the light' is an excellent album. It does contain more originals than previous Shad's albums which was a help, but i believe his best (so far) was 'Heartbeat'. Hank's playing was more exciting and adventurous on that album.

'Sound of Silence' in my opinion was the best track on the 'Movies' album and one of the few vocals that does translate into a good instrumental.

I feel that the original song has strong, powerful lyrics which, when replaced by a solo instrument, are lost and therefore so is the whole concept of the song. The melody is too repetitive to be played as an instrumental unless it is "a completely new arrangement with original ideas/sections". Therefore, it is not The Sound of Silence but some hybrid track based on it.

We will never agree on some of these love/hate tracks so it's not really worth getting into a lather over.

I blame Malc for starting the thread in the first place.

For me the later covers are often initially disappointing until I have played them enough to forget that they were originally someone else's vocal tracks, and then they become 'Shads tracks'. Then if and when I hear the original it's this version that sounds like the cover, and is disappointing. But if I didn't like the original much in the first place I do find it hard to like the Shads cover version. Some exceptions though - especially on Hank's last two outings where I disliked many of the originals - 'Weep' being a notable exception.
