Okay Des....standing in the middle of the room trying to make sense of it all. Actually, it's amazing what Shads fans like/dislike and from the very small poll of opinion there appears to be no 'rule' that would say "A typical Shads fan would like..........". And I've absolutely no problem with that - but it's fun to ask isn't it??...... :D

Malc, don't apologise. My comment of "Unnecessary" wasn't directed at anything you'd said, but at someone else's comment that I considered rather rude.

As a group with enormous vocal talent, I wonder why The Shadows didn't try vocal versions of their cover material ?.

Great thread!

Just goes to show that beauty is in the eyes of the beholder!

Interesting to see that the early years don't feature much - quite right too. With Harris and Meehan and Rostill and Bennett they were producing good edgy recordings. As in so much of life, things change, so you take your choice.

It's funny that because the vocals they did do in the 80's (such as 'You Rescue me','Guardian Angel' and 'The modern way') are all very good. They seemed to give up on vocals after 1984 for some reason. Maybe if the covers were done with vocals they would have sounded better, though i can't see Hank and Bruce singing 'Heaven is a place on earth' or 'I wanna dance with somebody'! :D

I actually 'cringe' when I hear The Shadows attempting vocals. They were the finest Instrumental band ever. Let's leave it at that.

dave robinson wrote:I get it perfectly - you just named a load of tunes that the Shadows covered in their early days and 95% are terrific instrumentals. Why are you comparing those with what is by comparison, rubbish on the eighties albums.
You know what, maybe I should keep my opinions to myself and let you lot get on with it . . . .

Hi Dave,
What would be the point of this site if people didn't express their opinions, reasonably of course. Would anyone ever write in at all? I like most of the old stuff but not all, likewise although there are many of the later tracks which in my opinion should never have been recorded, there are amongst them some real gems, - it takes all sorts.

I agree Des and have said as much, it's the answers and bitchy innuendo that I can do without. I try to offer constructive comment to stuff that by and large could be very interesting to debate, I'm happy with my input, but it hasn't gone unnoticed that certain folks tend to go out of their way to mis-understand and appear to want to make something more out of my comments, trying to insinuate that they are somehow derogatory. I personally really don't give a toss about these people and I'll mention it to them when we meet face to face, let's see how vocal they are then eh? ;)

:o ?? - Finest instrumental band ever for me too, but other than one or two very early vocals which may have been a little weak (vocally), I think their vocal numbers in the main are great (imho).

Despite recording some really bad stuff in the 80's they did some bad stuff in the 60's as well, listen to 'Last train to Clarksville' that should have been done as a vocal. Also, i wasn't too keen on 'Little Princess' or 'That's my desire'.
Some people will probably disagree with that but that's just my personal opinion.
