Cliff Hall - Who's on bass ?

Postby Kon-Tiki » 22 Jun 2010, 13:47

:?: Who's on bass on Cliff Hall's catchy new jazz-CD "Moon Dance" ?
- and who's on vocal on track 4 - "Close enough for love" ?

If you really want to relax and listen to good music, buy this CD a.s.a.p....
- it's highly recommended, and you'll get it from Leo's Den.

I have bought it, but haven't yet listened to it, I sure will!
Last week I received a rare copy of Cliff's 1983 solo LP "Shadows In Ivory". It was being auctioned on eBay and I paid a bargain price for it: only 7 Pounds (excluding package and postage costs of 12 Pounds)! I had been looking for it for years and this was the first time (I know of) it appeared on eBay! I thought it would fetch a much higher price, as it was a very limited release on Brian Bennett's Honeyhill Records label.

:D In the good old days without internet and email, I bought "Shadows in Ivory" from the great John Friesen.

I mentioned the LP for Cliff Hall at one of the Shadowmanias, and he had a big laugh at it....

But to the question: Who's on bass on Cliff Hall's new CD "Moon Dance" ?

:P According to Cliff Hall's manager and Pat at Leo's Den, it's Cliff himself on the bass.

Believe if you will! Cliff is playing the bass in the bass cleff of the keyboard at the same time as he is playing the rest of the tune with his right hand!!

I think he could gain admission to the Magic Circle.

That's very impressive! As some of you probably know, brilliant bass guitarist John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin does something similar: he also plays keyboards and does the bass parts (quite basic, but effective) with the bass pedals live on stage. It's seems quite difficult to me to use both hands for a melody line and at the same time both feet to play rhythmic bass!

The first person I remember doing that was Glen D Hardin of the Crickets. When they toured here in 1962 with Bobby Vee and later, he had a small Fender Rhodes Bass Piano - it was new then - and used that with his left hand and a normal piano with his right hand. The set was L shaped with Glen standing at the apex.

That skill is much more common than you might think. Most accomplished organists, whether of the cathedral or electronic variety, can do it with ease. I haven't played a gig at a typical northern (English) social club for the best part of three decades, but back in the 1960s and 1970s, almost every one of them had a resident organist who did precisely that thrice nightly on Friday and Saturday and five times on Sundays.

I sometimes work with a local musician who used to do a solo act playing guitar, singing and... you've guessed it... playing bass pedals with his feet!

I guess it's much more difficult to do when you play uptempo music with mostly improvisation on top of it, than more slow and rehearsed music. Correct me if I'm wrong though, because I don't play keyboards! For the last ten years I have been playing acoustic guitar (mainly rhythm) and electric bass guitar, so using just my hands and occasionally tapping my feet to the rhythm of the music!

I can go with that, Jim. The keyboard player in our band has always said that, if I can't do a gig at the last minute, he'll split the keyboard and do the bass part himself. Having heard him do that, I know my place is the band is never guaranteed!

As a lad I studied church organ, to no great effect. However, even I managed to knock out a rudimentary bass line with my feet when I was caught playing my version of Twist and Shout in what I thought was an empty church...

There's another copy of Cliff's rare "Shadows In Ivory" LP for auction on eBay, signed by the man himself. Current bid is quite low.
