In his early days, Robert Fripp of King Crimson fame spent many an hour learning to play OBS at the same speed as the record. It wasn't till later that he learned that the recording had been sped up! :?

You'd think it would be possible to play that tune at the correct speed without trickery. I've seen quite a few Django type guitarists picking at that speed on many occasions. And they were using Maccaferri's too :o
I forgotten about that recording.

It isn't the simple speed that precludes its playing. Its the order of notes.
I couldn't play it when I was a lad and neither could I play the Cruel Sea ( at the proper speed, 98BPM ) but I now play the Cruel Sea with my fingers..... but I still can't play Orange Blossom Special with my fingers at the correct speed.

Have a listen to the Hellecasters version with Jerry Donahue  seen this played live  also worth checking out Jerrys version of the Savage on his CD Neck of the Wood (played on a Telecaster :) )

sausage fingers wrote:The Hellecasters version is played using the old Les Paul/Albert Lee echo trick that puts in the inbetween notes(one repeat around 300m/s depending on the tempo of the song), so in a way thats still cheating(not knocking anyone still great playing).
Is there a good full speed backing track, i'd love to have a play around, i think you can purchase the original Hellecasters version backing track.

I could just about play The Cruel Sea when it first came out but I did the fast middle passage on the first 3 frets so it was a bit "bassy"! Now i can play it in the correct position and likewise with my fingers (can't be doin' with plectra). As for OBS.....forget it
