I'm sure there will be lots of discussion about the performers and their playing styles, but with my sound engineer's hat on I noted that many people commented to me about the excellent quality of the PA sound. Yes, there were on-stage glitches ('faulty-valve' noises from the stage-right JMI amp and thyristor buzz from Jet's gear and Phil's Meazzi) but the sound that the audience heard was beautifully clean most of the time.

Just one thought - and it's about 'that sound'. A modern PA system has got subs that will comfortably handle low frequencies down to bottom E on a bass guitar. However, last night's show gave that bottom-end territory firmly to the kick drum. Bass guitar was there, of course, but it was very fortunate that all five drummers had an accurate right foot because the 'sound' was nothing like what a Shadows concert would have sounded like in 1960. We tend to forget that Tony's bass drum and Brian's bass drum would have been completely inaudible in in theatres and concert venues when The Shadows were forging their sound.

Personally, I would have mixed last night in exactly the same way that ESP mixed it, but are there any out there who craved an 'authentic' early Shadows sound with no bottom end?

What a great show! Excellent performances all round. Isn't it great that Bruce makes time to do this?

And I agree with Ray. I thought the sound from the PA and the mix was spot on, clear, intelligible and everything you could want but with that added low end that '60s gear just couldn't do.

As a sound engineer, I completely agree with Ray. The sound was excellent all day; Dave did a great job.

For the technically minded, I noticed that the speakers were Turbosound, the same as used on The Shadows Final Tours.

The sound was absolutely spot on - just wonderful crisp lead guitar sounds.

As I wasn't there I can't be sure, but if it was the same guy (Dave) who has been doing it for the last few 'Shadowmanias', since the 2005 event, he always did achieve a good front of house sound. Bruce once told me that he did some work for Paul McCartney and I clearly remember the improvement after the first few events when the sound wasn't that good.

I agree, Ray, the sound where I was sitting was excellent and Dave did an excellent job.
Back in the day, the auditorium sound and, indeed, TV sound was always disappointing because they had neither the technology nor the Daves to operate it. However, is that what we generally mean by "that sound", or do we mean the sound on the records?
