Tony, am I correct in recalling that you are an Aussie? I'm here in Adelaide, and I hope your book has a photo of the odd four knob (prototype?) Marvins that Hank and Bruce used on their late '60's Australian Tour and TV appearances!

Hi John,

The wrong Tony I'm afraid, I was hatched in East London Guv!!!
A cockney and proud of it.

No pics of that particular Burns though I've nicked one of the Marvin 'S' from the 'Pearls' book.
I adore those 'S' guitars, they look so cool.
I hope our bass player in Legend, Chris Jarvis, gets his wallet out and buys me and Terry Carter one for Christmas . . I can dream . . .

Keep those orders for the Burns booklet coming.

cheers

I believe that messr Hoffman and myself may have lived in (or at least frequented) the same neck of the woods at some point. Chingford North East London? Ah, Chingford Mount, the Ridgeway, Epping Forest and the final resting place of the Krays! Such memories! Actually, not that far from where Cliff and the Shads (or Drifters!) first met and rehearsed. Mum and Dad tell me that, along with Joe Brown and a few others, Cliff and the lads used to rock Cheshunt back in the day! And what days they must have been. Shame I was just too young to remember!!!!!!

Hey Chris - I hail from Chingford as well !! As a kid I lived in Dale View Ave (off Larkshall Road) and Warren Road (off The Ridgeway). I remember seeing a lot of well known groups in the tin-shack next to the Royal Forest Hotel (where the buses turned round).

Blimey, Hoffers! Only ordered it yesterday and the Burns booklet arrived this morning! Nice one!!!

Took a quick look through it whilst the washing was in (have to wash my undies at least once a month) and I can say that it looks excellent. Absolutely packed with info and photos (mostly in full colour). As a non-guitar-playing Shads fan, it's hard to say which I found the most interesting, but there are certainly plenty of fax and fotos that I hadn't come across before. Loved the pic at the top of page 45... Now is that Cliff doing a Brian impression, or Brian doing a Cliff impression? All in all, fantastic. One of the best Shadsfax productions so far. Roll on 'The Shadows - the Ludwig Years'.....!!!!

;) :D

Jim, been a long time since we lived there... let's just say that Shades of Rock came out the year we left! Lansdown Road opposite, or near to, the reservoir. Strangely enough, I'm off down to Cuffley in a couple of weeks, so not a million miles away from the old stomping ground! All the best.

There is still live music happening in Chingford, as The Triumphs (including Rob Bradford (vocals) and yours truly (guitar)) will be playing at St Teresa's Hall (corner of Station Road and Kings Road) on October 23rd. This is a Saturday night dance, so we'll be stepping outside our 'tribute to Joe Meek' repertoire and playing a selection of sixties music, including maybe some Shadows. A fiver to get in and profits go to The Altzheimers Society.

Oops, sorry for going O/T, Tony!

Just to say that out of 300 printed I have approx 70 copies left with 2 or 3 orders arriving per day at the moment.

The response has kicked my butt into gear and I've now started work on a Jet & Tony special.
I first mentioned it years ago but it never materialised and I'm glad because I can now publish in full colour and have access to more info/pics.
I'm hoping to include a CD of rarer Jet tracks with the booklet and will give full details when it is ready.

cheers

Hi Dave,

Yes, I'm off to see Duane Eddy at the Festival Hall and York.
I booked Festival Hall and then two weeks later the York gig was announced.
Still, I'm looking forward to catching up with old friends in London.

The Jet & Tony booklet is coming together nicely and should be ready early 2011.

cheers everyone

Tony

Something I don't think I've ever seen is a close up photo of the Double Twelve Burns that Hank used on quite a few recorded tracks, and even on stage- like that You Tube video from a Dutch or Danish (??) concert when Cliff is singing 'What'd I Say'- the one with both guitar and bass strings...

I'd like to see out of interest how the bridge saddles and scale length issues were handled by whoever designed and developed this fascinating and individual sounding instrument!
