OT: Doctor Who 'live'

Postby George Geddes » 17 Oct 2010, 11:32

Saw this production at the SECC on Friday. Great fun, with Nigel Planer hamming it up on stage, Matt Smith's Doctor on the big screen video, and various aliens and monsters tramping around the arena.

And... a superb 16 piece band conducted by Ben Foster plus nine vocalists who somehow manage to recreate Murray Gold's music for the tv series ( which is normally played by a full orchestra) to accompany both the on-stage action and the various video clips. Didn't recognise any names in the band but great playing and a very full sound.

Saw an advert for it on TV last night, during Emmerdale (which I must have been watching accidentally...) and I'll have to admit that it does look pretty good. If only I was 40 years younger...

I gather that the Daleks will not be back for a year or so and that they are claiming that the 'new' Daleks are now just the new Ruling Class and that the old style 'new' Daleks will still be appearing. Hmmm.... Sounds like a bit of backpeddling to me, due to the poor response to the new multicoloured plastic ones. Still, they'll look good in the arenas and I'm sure they'll stand out under the spotlights. I shall be keeping an eye on YouTube...

I saw the show Tuesday night in Birmingham and thought it was great. I love Murray Gold's music and it adds a new dimension to the episodes. I really enjoyed hearing the music played live. The aliens were great fun except the stone angels which are really scary! I had a really good time and it was nice to see such a diverse audience enjoying themselves. I was very impressed with the good behaviour of the children who probably were having the

Don't let age put you off going Chris as I'm 51 and there were lots of other older people there and without children!

Best Wishes

Well, I will not see 60 again and my son is 25 and we both thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Not quite as good as the Star Wars concert, but still an entertaining show.

Yeah, only joking really!!! I was born two days after the very first episode of Doctor Who went out and so I don't remember a time when it wasn't on. Well, apart from the 16 years between 1989 and 2005 that is!!! Been a fan for as long as I can remember and I still get excited by it now!

Back in 1990, I think it was, myself and a few friends went to see the previous Doctor Who stage play - The Ultimate Adventure - in Manchester. Jon Pertwee was reprising his role as the Doctor and, as he stepped out of the TARDIS, replete with shock of white hair, velvet smoking jacket and long cape... yes... it was MAGIC!!!!!!

A young lady I knew WAS talking about buying me a ticket (maybe 2) for the nearest staging of the new one, but as we aren't talking anymore (I know, how do I do it?) this now looks unlikely. Maybe I should have waited another couple of months until falling out with her... Oh well... I shall keep an eye out for the inevitable DVD!!!!

Cheerio.
