I'm guessing that these TV performances were mimed???

Hi

It was all to do with advertising at that time. There are several shots with the nameplate covered up. The Baldwin nameplates were added when the guitars were taken back in for servicing and Bruce's green Marvin and John's green bass were never returned!!

I remember seeing another TV show at the time with Licorice playing (or miming to) Naughty Nippon Nights. Presumably this was a few days earlier and with Tony on drums too, although I'm afraid I didn't notice at the time.

Hi.

this picture was not taken during the Shadows's session at the Talk Of The Town in 1968 but in 1969 or 1970 when
a TV show featuring the greatest hits of the sixties was produced. I remember reading in NME or Melody Maker that Brian Bennett was not available when the show was produced and that Tony Meehan stepped in for him.
The Shadows played "Apache" and Cliff Richard, accompanied by The Shadows, performed "Bachelor Boy" and another song
which I don't remember. When seeing this show on German TV I was wondering if Cliff and the Shadows were miming or not,
but I never had a chance to see those clips again, maybe today I would hear if it was Live or mimed only.

This was not the first time that John Rostill and Tony Meehan played togeter. During their above mentioned season at
"The Talk Of The Town" first Brian Bennett became ill and Cliff Richard deputised for him during one night. Then Tony Meehan played on some nights until John Rostill became sick too and had to be replaced by Brian Locking.
I don't know if there ever was the line-up of Marvin / Welch /Locking / Meehan at the Talk Of The Town but I know that the Shadows played some shows there as Marvin / Welch / Locking / Bennett just like back in 1962 / 1963.

Best regards
Peter

Hi Peter

This picture is definitely not from 'Pop Goes the Sixties', which is what you are refering to. On that show- which featured Tony as well as reuniting some of the other 60's bands - John played his white Fender Jazz Bass. It is captured on You Tube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hdDUfFBPi24. I too remember them doing Naughy Nippon Nights on the Jimmy Tarbuck Show with Licorice. There was another TV show, i think it was called 'After Ten Fellas' where Brian was ill and Tony deputised. It was to celebrate their ten years together. I remember them miming to Don't Forget to Catch Me suspended by parachutes!! This pic could be from then.

Hi Stuart,

thanks for letting me know. Also thanks for putting in the clip from the show, are the other clips from this TV-show featuring Cliff and the Shad's, on You Tube, too ?

The "...at the movies" show also featured The Shadows playing Chicago, Hank singing "I-yi-yi-yi love you very much" dressed as Carmen Miranda and an Addams family-style horror film spoof!! I imagine this is the type of thing which Brian hated, like being pushed through a mangle by Arthur Askey.
