Best current TV theme music

Postby Shad1 » 06 Nov 2010, 00:41

I was just wondering about members' views on current TV themes. To my mind there are a few that I 'like' - New Tricks is one, Hustle is another (very good), but the standout for me is 'House' - sheer class.
I'm aware that not all members will have been able to hear the first two but perhaps they have favourites in their own patch of the world?

"Dexter".

Oh, and "Mad Men".

They're both on Spotify.

Yes, brilliant, and they're a couple of the finest shows on TV.

Martin.

P.S. The Sopranos and Six Feet Under are great too...

New Tricks - outstanding.

If that doesn't get your feet tapping then nothing will!

I've never seen that programme, but the theme song (which I heard for the first time today on Youtube) sounds like a re-write of "Minder" crossed with That's Livin' Alright from "Auf Wiedersehn Pet"...

"Dexter" and "Mad Men", on the other hand, are a bit more... well... cerebral?

While not wishing to condemn the themes already mentioned, it is my belief that they are not in the same class as the classic themes of the 1950's - 1980's. Many of those themes are instantly recoignisable and are classics in their own right.
The very mention of programmes like Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased), The Prisoner, Man In a Suitcase, The Avengers, Danger Man,The Persuaders, The Sweeney, Dr Who etc etc means a tune that is instantly recalled 40+ years on.You only need to hear the first few bars and you know what is coming on. The writing talents of Edwin Astley, Ron Grainer, Lawrie Johnson and John Barry were a vital part of the enjoyment of these shows and their music forms a good part of my CD collection.
I really do not need to include links to the afforementioned themes so I will tie it all up with this:,http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WxcSFyg2BBY

Great theme, forgettable show.

Pulaski was a very good theme tune cap'n. I don't think that the show was given enough time to get into the viewers' psyche though. I can remember actually quite enjoying it once I got into it.

While I agree with your comments about some of the classic tv themes, Malc was asking specifically about current shows. I have to agree with him about the House theme; it is superb. I also like New Tricks and from some not quite current but still being repeated shows; Friends and Malcolm in the Middle, both great songs in their own right.

There is, of course, Alan Hawkshaw's sublime theme to Countdown for more Shadows interest.
