I supose its all down to how you interpret the written word, the way I understand what is written in the link is, Tab had a style of holding the Bass, and when he was more in the public eye he developed it to be his trade mark making it more obvious ? not disagreeing with George, but my interpretation is different.
Maybe of interest, In 1967 i was the 'N Betweens (Slade) roadie and we played with The Peddlers at Tiles London, unfortunately their music was not appreciated and they got boo-ed off stage
I'm sure that Tab Martin only developed his gimmi... er... idiosyncratic way of holding his Gibson EB-2 bass after he joined the Peddlers and could perform on stage whilst sitting looking cool on a barstool.
If he'd stood up to play the bass with the group, he'd have made himself the visual centre of attention because the organist and drummer were seated (of course). So that was probably a group policy decision. The holding of the bass near vertical added a certain musicianly air to Tab's playing - almost as though he were a jazz player forced by circumstance to play the electric bass instead...

PS: I knew someone else who used the same technique, with the same model bass with a second pickup added near the bridge like on Tab's instrument (copying, of course).
