Shadows Perfidia version 2 ?

Postby hubcaps » 20 Dec 2010, 14:25

I recently came across a different version of Perfidia (on the Spotify website) which supposedly comes from an album “The Best of the Shadows (Gold Series)” issued by OK records in 2009.
The arrangement is very similar to the Ventures version.
Does anyone out there know when this was recorded?
It sounds to me like the lead guitar is a Burns rather than a Strat so presumably it would be post ’63.

If you mean the one that is apparently on the "Best of the Shadows (Gold Series)", then it is quite intriguing. I have checked the rest of that album and they all seem to be genuine Shadows tracks. This version of Perfidia as you say is more like the Ventures. I have two versions of Perfidia by The Ventures. Each one has the same arrangement but is a completely different recording. This "Shadows" version does seem to be the same arrangement as the Ventures, although nothing like the one we all know and love.

It isn't The Shadows playing Perfidia.

It's not The Shadows playing Atlantis on that album either.

All the other tracks are genuine.

I recall Bruce playing us all a snatch of Perfidia, "Ventures style" a couple of Shadowmanias ago, I think that and two other clips were from EMI material not released? :geek:

The Ventures' version of Perfidia played by Bruce and his group at Shadowmania was played live. Bruce didn't play any recorded but unreleased version of a Ventures style Perfidia by the Shadows either. He did play several songs from the BBC sessions, but all were live versions of things which had been released.

It's just not The Shadows on that track on Spotify.

I think the non-Shadows tracks on that compilation are by The Apaches (Shades of Grey)

I missed that one Jim. It even has a key change :o . It would be interesting to see if the sleeve notes acknowledge the real artists on these tracks.

I definitely remember Bruce playing a BBC recording of The Shadows doing Perfidia at Shadowmania about 5 or 6 years ago and the arrangement was more or less the same as The Ventures ie. quite different to the Out of the Shadows version. I remember feeling frustrated as it seemed at the time that the BBC recordings would never see the light of day.

Merry Christmas to all!
