I believe the basic tune is what defines the composition and, indeed, its composer(s). Adlibbing or embellishing at the time of recording was and is commonplace, especially with players like Hank. With session players, like Alan Jones, for example, the same is true and lovely bass lines like his would not normally get a credit unless the contribution is above and beyond what is considered normal in an essentially creative field.
Hi Ian,
I agree with your comment regarding the contribution of the musicians, and particularly with the sessions players, and if some musicians are more creative than others, it's also the composition which also gives inspiration to them. What I just wanted to mean is: it happens often enough that a session musician brings more than only "normal creativity" on a tune, but an important part of the arrangement, and this is what I called"In the shadows" because nobody will know, and this musician will be quoted (when he is) as a "simple musician".
Best Regards
Pierre
PS: sorry if my comment is a little bit out of the real topic, it's just because I'm myself a recording session musician since a long time.
