Actually, in that Sixties look-back TV show John had long sideburns and was playing (or miming with) a white Fender bass. I'm inclined to think this picture was indeed from a 1968 TV show made during the Talk of the Town period.
And yes, a Marvin/Welch/Locking/Meehan line-up did perform at the Talk of the Town!
