Hi Paul.
Thank you again for the detailed info. It's fascinating to hear about the boy's in the early days. The drummer must have been a bit nervous judging by the number of cigarette, tab ends, on the floor under the drum kit.
Regards Geoff.

I´m sure Bruce borrowed the archtop Gibson Electric Spanish 125 for the photosession. It must be the same guitar, seen in the b/w photo of Lord Rockingham`s XI orchestra, as being played by the guitarist in the upper row.

The photographer of the Rollercaster Records vinyl (ROLL2026) covershot is Allen Newton. A slightly different picture taken from the same spot appeared as front cover for Picturegoer magazine in March 1959. This is a b/w picture with tinted colours, Cliff in white jacket, red socks and tie, pinkish shirt and throusers !It is really a thrill to finally see the original full colour shot on the record sleeve.

Inside, the magazine middlefold story begins with
"Get a load of Cliff Richard cutting his first long-player, to be released next week. Picturegoer`s Allen Newton, who also took the cover picture, photographed him making it the-off-beat way.
Usually, during these sessions, silence in the studio is golden. Not here. In fact, to bolster background effects, over a hundred of his fans were invited along to make as much noise as they liked.
Which raises a point. How will Richard fans who buy the LP take to all this hubbub on their costly disc? Would`nt they prefer to hear Cliff loud - and also clear?
Athmosphere, explained the eighteen-year-old-rock`nroller. It helps with the right effect."

The lenghty interview continues with a brief comments on Elvis and announcing Cliff`s up-coming small film role in "Serious Charge".

My copy came today courtesy of Leo's Den. Great quality - it is now safely transferred onto my MP3 player, thanks to Ion. Old technology to new in an (almost) instant!

Do you think this LP will be downloadable as an mp3 format?

My turntable is long gone and I don't have the facility to convert. :(

....but I have, Alan - so if you want I can arrange it for you - but if I understand message 29 correctly it looks as though there's a full cd (with these tracks and many more) coming just before Christmas.

Arpeggio wrote:Hi Greg,
It's well known that most of the original Drifters weren't considered to be good enough musicians to tour and record with Cliff. By October '58 Hank and Bruce were present and correct and Jet played (on the first tour) to augment Ian Samwell on bass. As Samwell didn't play bass on recordings - I would suspect that Jet was on bass for the BBC sessions. Tony didn't join until January 1959 - so I guess that Terry Smart played drums on the 1958 programme.

So - that's Marvin / Welch / Harris / Smart for the December 1958 broadcast and the classic Marvin / Welch / Harris / Meehan for the rest.

Rob :D

This means that at this moment, "Guitar Boogie" on this 10" LP is the only officially released track of The Drifters in their own right, with the line-up: Hank Marvin, Bruce Welch, Jet Harris and Terry Smart.

According to the blurb from Rollercoaster Records the CD would follow later in the year, as the LP was released October did they mean 2010 or is this another long wait for this release ?

No more news about : "A CD version of the album will follow later this year and will contain twenty-five tracks, all from the same era." (this was in 2010...)
Meanwhile I have long digitalised the 10" vinyl !

Bernie Andrews moved on to become a fine producer for BBC Radio 1 through to his retirement. I only wish he had lived to see this release but he has been, I suppose, mixing harps since the summer.

RIP Bernie.

I had news from Rollercoaster Records. The 25 tracks CD release has been postponed but not cancelled, it will be announced later.
