Are these all acetates you own, or maybe a couple of these and are they only by The Shadows or related or also Cliff Richard & The Shadows? "Big Top Blues" could be "Three-Thirty Blues", written by Duane Eddy or even a working title for "Blue Shadows". The title "Mandingo" resembles "Fandango" and "Speedy Gonzales", "Gonzales" or maybe "Y'Arriva".

Of the recordings above, I have "Throw Down A Line" and "Love, Truth And Emily Stone", both demonstration tracks by Hank Marvin from 1969 and 1970 respectively. Also, I have a recording by The Shadows or rather Hank and Bruce, called "Take Special Care", a track officially released by Cliff Richard & The Shadows in 1965 on the album "Cliff Richard".

The Shads performed "Barney's Blues" ( a reference to Jazz guitarist Barney Kessel) on Radio Luxembourg. On the version (dodgy sound quality) that I have - Cliff introduces it as such. Maybe "Big Top Blues" could be that (if someone had 'cut out' Cliff's introduction?)? Obviously I can't be 100% sure - but I've personally never heard of "BIg Top Blues". Intriguing!

Rob :)

Hi all,

"Big Top Blues" is certainly a different track than "Barney's Blues" or "3:30 Blues" or "Blue Shadows".
"Mandingo" is also a unique track.
"Speedy Gonzales" is a Hank & Bruce demo for Cliff's "Y'Arriva".
"Shame On You" is again a Hank/Bruce demo for the Cliff track from the "21 Today" LP, however with partly altered lyrics. Interestingly I have seen a demo which had the title "Naughty Girl". With this name the track was released by Col Joye down under as a single already in late 1960/early 1961 (Festival, FK-29) prior to Cliff's version from October 1961. Composers credits list "Marvin - Walsh - Joye" (sic).

Best wishes,

Ulrich
