If my memory serves me correctly, didn't Hank play three parts in Thunderbirds - staring on Bass VI, then adding an octave up on 'normal' guitar, then another octave up again - each one continuing as the others came in over the top? Mind you, I suppose that would be a triple solo part, not dual solo... :D

I've just had a listen to a few tracks and I'm amazed at the amount of dual tracking and overdubs (this is only the 1960's, not the later recordings, some of which were done over two continents...). Double t

Shotgun has an extra track for the lead guitar in the second section of Shazam-like stops.
Nivram and Filleted Place and The Girls, as discussed.
Spring Is Nearly Here and Some Are Lonely, those little high interjections.
Les Girls, the muted part of the melody is double tracked harmony.
Foot Tapper is double tracked, but in unison.
Atlantis, as mentioned.
Geronimo, the muted part of the melody is double tracked in unison.
It's A Man's World, the intro and coda are double tracked in harmony, the final run-down chords are alternately from each track.
Fandango, some phrases are double tracked in harmony.
Lonely Bull, the main melody is double tracked, largely in unison.
Don't Stop Now is largely double tracked in harmony (I can play the verses but the middle-8 defeated me!)

That's as far as I got before my head started to spin. I expect there are more for those people with hi-fi and better ears than mine to find.

I'm (very) open to correction if anyone cares to!

Best wishes, Stephen

How about this? Is it 12 strings too, or Hank playing lead on bass guitar and then a second playing?

Isn't Thunderbirds played on the rare Burns Double Twelve, which had both a normal guitar string set and a 6 string bass string set?

This is the model Hank is using in the You Tube live concert clip where Cliff is singing What'd I Say...a really full sound which sounds like a guitar and a 6 string bass played in unison..

Eric Haydock of the Hollies also had one of these Burns models.

No. It is played on a Fender Bass VI.

Did he? I've never seen a picture of him with it - until now:

That's the only time I've ever seen Tony Hicks with a Gretsch, too.

But I have certainly seen Eric Haydock using a Fender Bass VI.

I read somewhere (George? Jim?) that when Abbey Road acquired the facilities for multi-tracking, everyone went potty trying to exploit it and the Shads were no exceptions. I have visions of a session playback. Norrie sees Wonderful Land/Guitar Tango-type revenue opportunities but is shouted down. "Nah, let's just record another lead track. Or maybe two!"

PS - Chu-Chi with headphones is a fun listen.

You guys certainly know your stuff!
I do not understand much of above. I recall reading something about HBM returning to the studio and raising something an octave and I thought 'Great!???'
Thats what happens when you exchange your guitar for a sextant in1964
