Thanks George
Is it a particular model Strat? The trem bar looks a lot longer than usual. There are probably other differences but hard to see in the video and photo.
best wishes

The famous Black Strat was a standard model from about 1972.

It was originally finished in blonde and featured the new larger CBS-era headstock but not the headstock-end "bullet" truss-rod adjustment. It was just a bit too early for that. Hank had the guitar customised (mainly by Soho luthier Sam Li) to within an inch of its life; sequentially:

(a) the scratchplate was changed to a tortoise version;

(b) the bridge pickup was replaced by a Gibson humbucker (used like this for prmotion of the singles from "Rockin' With Curly Leads");

(c) the guitar was resprayed in black,the Gibson humbucker relocated to the neck position and a Fender Wide-Range humbucker installed in the bridge position, along with a switch to give just the bridge-side coil of the FWR pickup; better-quality gold-plated Schaller tuners were fitted and all the other metal parts gold-plated (this was the guitar when used for the Paris Olympia LP);

(d) the tortoiseshell scratchplate was replaced with a three-ply black one and the humbucking pickups replaced by normal Stratocaster single-coil units (with a Dimarzio Fat Strat in the bridge position added at one point) and two Strat slider switches fitted in parallel (thereby giving any pickup combination); this was the guitar as used on the 1977 "Golden Dates" tour and beyond to 1981 or so.

Hi Jim
Thank you very much for these details. Back in those days I didn't play (and am just learning now) and although we were always playing the records (and CDs and cassettes) I didn't take a lot of notice of the actual guitars they played but now I'm fascinated by all this information too and often spend time just looking at photos of Strats :)
best wishes

Apache, the black guitar on Hanks left is a Hayman/Shergold guitar build in the UK by former "family members"of Burns in the seventies.

Jim
Hanks start was not form 72,because the bullet trustrod was a gizmo from Fender as early in the summer of 71.
So i guess Hanks strat is from 70,because a 69 has a maple (custom order) or a rosewood "cap" on the neck as a fredboard.
The black pickguard/scratsplate on Hanks strat was a b/w/b/w a 4 layer one....pre dated Fenders b/w/b 3 layer a few years.
Those one piece maple necks form that periode are very rare,I spotted one of those necks on eBay last year with a price of $ 5000.... :roll:
I''m glad i have my black strat for nearly 30 years now,it was much cheaper believe me! ;)and it sounds like a dream :)
