John Barry dies

A truly prolific composer.
His music paints pictures, Out of Africa being one of my favourites, and yes I too remember The John Barry Seven with Vic Flick.
A great loss to music however as said before the music lives on.

To think his styles went from 'Hit and Miss' to 'Dances With Wolves' - just fantastic. First stereo LP I ever bought was Stringbeat - and it's still on the iPod. Will be greatly missed.

Too many of some of the biggest artists from the 1960's/1970's and beyond have gone recently. Gerry Rafferty, now John Barry. I hope our heroes will stay with us for many more years.

His music was very well known even as far as here, Manila. The Persuaders also showed here; I had never seen and was fascinated with the car that Tony Curtis drove in the series. The theme is of course well known to me and evokes memories. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ykLCAfVa410

One of the first records I ever bought was the John Barry Seven version of 'Walk Don't Run' which was released here in the UK about the same time as the Ventures hit in the USA. I prefered the Venture's version, in the end, but it did bring john Barry to my notice.

The first version of Walk - Don't Run! that I ever heard (and this was as late as 1963) was the John Barry Seven's recording on the green Columbia label (c/w I'm Moving On, which was a virtual re-run of Hit And Miss).

For all the merits of The Ventures (of whom I am a big fan), I still think the JB7 version is better in every way. OK, it took The Ventures to convert that Johnny Smith jazz chord exercise into a workable rock instro, but JB's version is just so twangy, so reverb-laden, so well-produced, so... tight, so.... British...!

RIP JB. I'll spin "Stringbeat" tonight.
