I have heard Gary four years ago in Austria. It was a very hot day because of the fine weather and he was on stage at
4.00 pm. When he had finished one of the first songs he changed his Paula to a Strat with a tremolo. The guitartech had reached
to him the guitar. Gary played a few bars ............ the guitar was audible bad out of tune ..................he looked nastily
to the guitartech. Then he stopped playing - gave orders to the band he said to the audience - "sorry you have to wait a
moment" ...... Gary tuned the Strat. Than he he said after a few minutes : "OK it`s all right now - let`s continue" !

Very cool and professionally ! He was a great player !

RIP

Hans

What a shocker. I just read it just now on the news. He has been one of my favourite guitarists since the seventies. I've seen him play on two occasions, first at the Playhouse in Edinburgh when he was doing his still got the blues tour and then in Glasgows Barrowlands when he did his thing with BBM along with Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce doing a Cream revival set. On both occasions he blew me away with his fantastic playing.
I still cant get my head round it. He'll leave a great big empty space in the music world for sure. :(
Hugh.

He was definitely one of the best. I recall that he plays an FBI-style tribute to the Shadows on Andrew Lloyd-Webber's album 'Variations'. I think he also played on the Shads/Hank tribute album 'Twang!'

Personally, I have always loved 'String of Hits' - the Shads' last great album - and Parisienne Walkways is one of the best tracks. A shame they didn't release it as a single as I think it would have been a great choice. There is some live footage of them in concert in Rotterdam in April 1980 and they do a great version of it.

Another musical giant departs the stage.

Very sad news.
Gary's instrumental ability has been a longstanding inspiration for me from the first time I heard "Whiskey in the Jar”.
RIP Gary
