Tomorrow's Cancelled

Postby StuartD » 19 Feb 2011, 17:50

Hi

Nice to hear this little gem played by Brian Matthew this morning. Often overlooked but a quality tune and production.

Regards

I remember buying the record on the day it was released in the summer of 1967. Couldn't wait to get home and play it (by then, you'd stopped automatically hearing new Shadows releases on what still - just - the Light Programme). This was not only because of the (unheard) A-side but also because of the B-side, Somewhere - which the Shads had played live on TV the previous autumn (1966).

Somewhere - with that DeArmond pedal all over it - was brilliant, and still is. But I was puzzled by Tomorrow's Cancelled. And to some extent, I still am. It's more like an out-take from Brian's "Change Of Direction" LP than a Shadows track.

Still puzzled.

I have to say I agree with Jim. I could never get my head round this track. It was very clever and well produced but, to my ears, it wasn't the Shads. I know they were keen to try different things but this flew in the face of the direction the music industry had taken around this time. After all this was the era when Clapton was God, Hendrix was picking solos with his teeth, Peter Green was playing the blues with so much style and feeling it made B B King worried and the our boys came out with this rather jazzy twee track. Definitely not one of my favourites.
My favourite Shads track from this period was "Scotch on the Socks" - in keeping with the period, a lot of fun and played with great drive.

Hi,
In France Tomorrow'c cancelled was issued with Maroc7, and I've always loved them both. Great tunes, great playing and great sound for me.

I absolutely love Tomorrow's Cancelled. A fantastic piece written, I believe, by Hank and Brian. Whenever I hear it, I am reminded of London in the late 1960s. I particularly like the quite subtle use of percussion and human voices. I always took the title literally and thought that it was somehow prophetic - The End of the World is Nigh!!!!

As I say, I love it and always felt that it was nice to hear the Shads trying to experiment with a different sound.

Always loved this track. Reminded me of the theme from The Saint.

My first introduction to Shadows music was when my mum bought me a cassette of the album 'Somethin' Else' which included the tune Tomorrow's Cancelled.
It has always been a favourite of mine and I was really pleased when I learned the other members of 'Legend' wanted to include the song in our act.
It's a great live number and we all enjoy playing it.

My least favourite Shadows number is probably Alice in Sunderland or Rhythm & Greens and quite a few from the 'Polybore' period.

cheers
