Trial or Master LP Pressing?

Postby mustangpete » 09 Oct 2009, 11:02

Hi All
Does anybody have information on the following?

About 30 years ago I was given two LP size pressings by someone working at a german record company. One side has "Don't Cry for Me Argentina", at 33rpm taking up all the area, and the other has "Bermuda Triangle" at 45rpm, again using all of the side.

The second is also double sided and has "The Shadows Greatest Hits" written on it. 7 tracks on side A, 8 on side B.

Both LP's have what appears to be a quality control label in the centre. Are they of any value other than historic?
Pleased to have any input.
Cheers

Hi Pete,

The first 12" sounds very much like the double-groove maxi single "Don't Cry For Me Argentina"/"Theme From 'The Deer Hunter'" b/w "Bermuda Triangle" to me. If so, in the run-out space near the label the number "K-052-Z-07044-A" should be visible for the A-side.

Regarding the second 12" it is hard to tell as there were several releases with this title. If you could supply the number in the run-out space I will probably able to identiy the record.

Best wishes,

Ulrich

Hi Ulrich

Thanks for a quick reply. Spot on for the Argentina disc - it is K-052-Z-07044-A both on the label (handwritten in red ink) and the runout. Is it unusual with "Bermuda Triangle"

2nd disc is YAX 4205-2. Again title is handwritten. These came straight from the factory that pressed them with just a plain quality control label in the centre.

Probably no monetry value then? Not that I want to part with them.

Hi Pete,

Both items are from Holland.

The three track 12" is a kind of curiosity as it has a double groove on the A-side. Depending where the needle hits the record you will hear either "Argentina" or "Deer Hunter". Your copy seems to be the first pressing which has the A-side running at 33 rpm and the B-side at 45 rpm. This one came out with a blue colour sleeve in 1979. Later releases have a brown colour sleeve and the B-side runs at 33 rpm, too.
The catalog number is K052Z-07044 for both of them.

The LP is the last volume of a 4 album series "The Shadows' Story" in which the Shads first four LPs have been re-issued with the original front artwork but a red frame. The catalog number for this LP is 5C 052.04782 and it was also released in 1979.

I have attached photos of the sleeves (sorry for the glare).

Best wishes,

Ulrich

PS. Regarding values, as the sleeves are missing I would guess similar to the original pressings.

PPS. Any chance of posting pics/scans of the labels?

Hi Ulrich

Many thanks. Now I know exactly what they are - how do you know which album the numbers refer to?

Pics of labels as requested. Apologies for confusing the language - it is in Dutch as you pointed out.

Cheers

Pete

Hi Pete,

I am glad that I could be of help and many thanks for the scans.

Regarding identifying the records, the 12" single was rather easy as there are not many released by the Shads. Your information that the B-side runs at 45rpm identified it as the first issue.
Having put together a quite large collection over the years I have put all of them into a database program. A search for "Greatest Hits" brought up quite a number but only from two countries I could find releases with 7 tracks on the A- and 8 and the B-side, the UK and Holland. The Dutch release also met your date of '30 years ago'. When you gave the matrix number from the run-out area I could cross-check it with the copies in my collection.

Best wishes,

Ulrich
