I came away from the Nottingham Final Reunion concert in September 2009 feeling very much the same as you Didier.

For me, Cliff’s “rock’n’roll” era 1958 to 1962 was great and was made so with the original Shadows lineup – I have no interest in Cliff’s subsequent career and output. Similarly I love Elvis’ music with his original band, Scotty, Bill and DJ, from 1954 to around 1958 but afterwards not a lot…

Does anyone else agree with that the Shadows (and Ventures) had also “done it all” by 1963?
Now donning my hard hat ……….

I feel much the same, including for Elvis. I only like what he recorded before being drafted. I remember buying blindly the "Elvis is back" album and being much disappointed...

Not quite all, but certainly their best...

I was NEVER an Elvis fan OR a Beatles fan. In fact, I blame the Beatles for wrecking instrumental music.

I didn't know what to expect from the Cliff/Shads toor, but I came away a big fan and I enjoy watching the DVD often.

Cliff has talent and is a fabulous entertainer. He should do well in Vegas.
Have you ever heard or Wayne Newton or Liberace?

Most here in the USA would have considered both washed up hasbeens.
Liberace performed for many years in Vegas nearly until his death in 1987. Wayne Newton remains one of the most successful Vegas entertainers to this date.

So, like Cliff or don't, I reiterate my KUDOS to Cliff for givin it a wherl in Vegas. He's nothing to prove to anyone at this point.

I remember Liberace very well, his piano fetched a fortune at the auction, but they couldn't sell his stool . . . . . .

Please tell me how The Beatles wrecked instrumental music, I have never heard such tripe.

If anyone wrecked instrumental music it was the artistes making the records and recording crap. The public are rarely wrong.

Aside from that Dave Edmunds, Fleetwood Mac, Focus, Acker Bilk, The Simon May Orchestra, Royal Dragoon Guards Band, Mason Williams, Sky and many more had big hits long after the Beatles became popular. :|

Life's too short.

Indeed. There are lot of British holidaymakers in Las Vegas anyway.

wstagner wrote:Have you ever heard or Wayne Newton or Liberace?

Both of them of course, but Liberace several years earlier than Wayne Newton. Liberace was a frequent performer on British television in the late 1950s and continuing into the 1960s. In the earlier days, he hadn't really developed the overblown persona he later affected. He was just a besuited performer at the piano.

Wayne Newton was more distant and has never been all that visible in the UK as far as I can remember. I recall seeing him for the very first time on TV circa 1966, when he was a musical/comedy guest on "The Lucy Show". It was clear that he was big as far as the USA was concerned, but he meant nothing here in GB. That has been a recurring theme on American variety shows shown here - guest stars about whom the studio audience were clearly ecstatic but who were unknown in Europe.

I saw WN again (recently) in the film "Las Vegas Vacation" (Chevy Chase et al) and was interested enough to Google him. There's loads of stuff on Youtube for a start.

So I see from that film, Youtube, etc... not to mention his own website.

He will probably do very well.

The "public" are frequently wrong. You speak of "crap"....that's mostly what today's music is.
I'm glad to be living in the mid 60's.
