Hi Bill,

I was referring to the Bee Gees earlier original and cover stuff recorded through 64-66 before Vince Melouney joined them with Smiley when they left for the UK..

They were always on the GO Show and other TV shows made in Melbourne in that period. I can't remember if they were on Fable or anotehr Melbourne label at that time? I do know that the Strangers with John Farrar backed a hell of a lot of artists and groups in the studio back about then- perhaps we should ask Glenn A Baker?!

I may be a bit aware of the Melbourne scene back then as a lot of Adelaide groups went to Melbourne to continue their careers on the national scene.(Twilights, Masters Apprentices, Zoot, Vibrants and others) I was over in Melbourne a couple of times in 1966, 67 and it was jumping! Couldn't get any gigs with my group though!

'Roach,

To the best of my memory the majority of the early '60's the Bee Gees were a resident act on Brian Henderson's 'Bandstand' which was a TCN9 Sydney show - along with Col Joye, Little Patti, Ray Brown and the Whispers, Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs etc - Melbourne was another world as far as the Sydney scene was concerned. We did hear Normie Rowe etc, but only as their records made the charts, at which time they might appear on 'Bandstand'. I think things started to open up from 65 onwards as the 'Rock' Shows became more acceptable to the TV audience and the need for more and more acts were needed to stop the repetition, and then we saw more of the artists from other states on Sydney TV.

Still, who knows, there are a lot of now unknown guitarists and drummers that did session work back then that we may never find out what tracks they played on and when.

...and before that they were on 'Desmond Testor's' TCN 9 kid's show -they travelled from Brisbane for that. ;)

Leaving aside the fact that it doesn't sound anything like his guitar work, if the recording is from 1964 it is too early for John Farrar to have been involved - His session work did not develop until later in the 1960's.

Andrew and Bill,

You may be right- if the backings were done in Sydney, it would have been other rock session players- possibly the guys from the Rajahs (formerly the R-Jays)??

...or Dave Bridge, ex Joyboy perhaps? There were quite a few guitarists around in those days, many of the Big Band guitarists were still playing as session men etc in much the same way as they were in UK -don't forget the lead guitar on the original release of 'Move It' wasn't HBM. ;)
