I respect your opinion, Dave, so I went back to listen to The Danny Gratton version and the Santo and Johnny original, back to back. I still don't like the Danny Gratton version (I think it jerks along as opposed to the S & J which flows), so I guess its a case of agreeing to disagree! This thread has been a good one, though, and it has inspired me to go back to Sleepwalk and play it more closely to the S & J version, which makes a nice change.

Slightly off topic but there is a wonderful version of 'Sweet Dreams' (Not the Shads 'McGuffie' track of the same name) played by the 'Hellecasters' as a tribute to Danny Gatton and also Roy Buchanan. These guys (Gerry Donaghue etc) can surely play.
I particularly enjoy them demonstrating not just the flash end of guitar playing but also the sensitive side - they combine them so well.

The Danny Gatton/Roy Buchanan 'Sweet Dreams' tribute starts at around 4.30. - but its all great listening.

The reason for the smoothness of the Santo And Johnny version is that it was done on a steel guitar with a slide, but I also respect your opinion and agree that Danny's isn't as smooth. I wasn't being critical of your thoughts, I was just adding my opinion by comparison. ;)

Agree absolutely about the Hellecasters, Malcolm. Saw them in Edinburgh many years ago and they were superb.

Last year, John Jorgensen did one of his gyspy jazz gigs in Glasgow - great player and really nice guy.

Yes, I thought the Danny Gatton 'Sleepwalk' was awful- too many irrelevant notes and too disjointed. I also don't like too many notes being played- I wasn't a Gary Moore fan, although he was pretty good as a singer. Jeff Beck does a very good version of Sleepwalk and a good version of Apache. Also Jeff 'Skunk Baxter' does a good version on steel guitar.
