My understanding is the publication referenced above is an unauthorised biography. That necessarily means that the author has gathered his information from wherever he can get it. One of the sources he used may well be the discussions which have taken place here and elsewhere in the media about a certain photograph, allegedly taken at the
Apache /
Quatermasster's Stores session, which showed Cliff playing/handling his J-200.
There is no third guitar on either of those two recordings and in particular, no acoustic guitar on
Quatermasster's Stores.
In a publication of 1962 or 1963, Cliff Richard reiterated the claim about the "Chinese drum" on
Apache - and surely if he'd played guitar on it, he'd have mentioned that? And he also said that he was one of the whistlers on
Stars Fell On Stockton. I'm not aware of any other claims by Cliff to have taken part in any Shadows recordings.
