In Dave Nicolson's new Jet Harris biography "In spite of everything" you can read the following on side 36:

Jet: "On 17 June, a couple of weeks into their Palladium residency, The Shadows went into the studio to cut Apache,
which had now been given a dramatic arrangement. Cliff came along too, and ended up playing the drum intro to Apache
and guitar on the flip, Quartermaster's Stores".................

I can only reiterate what Tony, Jet, Hank and Bruce have all told me (& I did ask Jet about this again only a year ago) emphatically - that Cliff most definitely did NOT play guitar on any Shadows recordings generally & "Quatermasster's Stores" specifically.

Bests....Rob :D

My understanding is the publication referenced above is an unauthorised biography. That necessarily means that the author has gathered his information from wherever he can get it. One of the sources he used may well be the discussions which have taken place here and elsewhere in the media about a certain photograph, allegedly taken at the Apache / Quatermasster's Stores session, which showed Cliff playing/handling his J-200.

There is no third guitar on either of those two recordings and in particular, no acoustic guitar on Quatermasster's Stores.

In a publication of 1962 or 1963, Cliff Richard reiterated the claim about the "Chinese drum" on Apache - and surely if he'd played guitar on it, he'd have mentioned that? And he also said that he was one of the whistlers on Stars Fell On Stockton. I'm not aware of any other claims by Cliff to have taken part in any Shadows recordings.

Have a listen again to QS Jim .... with headphones, I'm convinced there is an acoustic in the mix.

Alan,

I'm listening to the stereo version, with the electric rhythm over to the right, bass and drums to the left and lead guitar slightly left of centre.

Is there a spot in the recording where you feel that the acoustic guitar is particularly audible? And roughly where (L180 - 0 - 180R) in the mix?

Intrigued...

Sorry Jim, a bum steer by me. I remember some time ago starting a thread on the amp used in Apache, which was then further developed by the picture on the sheet music to QS, which was then further developed by Rob B. on additional guitars/percussion on early Shads tracks, for ex. FBI, Gonzales, Sleepwalk (and others). When I saw this old thread being raised, I jumped to the wrong conclusion thinking that QS was one of the examples. I have listened again, and I'm wrong  , although I'm still out on whether or not Cliff played acoustic on some of the early numbers. ;)
