Ah, Jim. Even after all these years, we still find new things we have in common...

My first Django LPs were likewise recordings with Rostaing rather than Grappelli, but I think they were on Realm or another Oriole subsidiary. I didn't play them too often and sold them to a specialist jazz store years later. Once I discovered the Grappelli recordings that was a different matter...

I saw Stephane on several of his tours, with either Ike Isaacs or Martin Taylor on guitar. Next week, I'll be at a gig by John Etheridge, another ex-Grappelli guitarist (part of the Glasgow Jazz festival).

PS: Will Hank tour after the album is released?

Well, whilst it's nice that Hank is still active, recording and playing, the gypsy jazz guitar thing worldwide already has myriad Django style players (from virtuoso to wannabees)

When Hank plays his electric guitar style- whether it's 1960's Shads stuff and all in between right up to his last solo electric recordings, he was and is recognisably HANK B.MARVIN...

But, from what I've seen and heard on You Tube (although I live in Australia,as does Hank, he doesn't come here where I live to play these days, as yet) as a gypsy jazz guitarist, he becomes just another one of a very large crowd of very similar sounding Djangos all over the world...

Good luck to him, and I guess he can afford to do exactly what he likes these days, but if I want to listen to that style, there's still the original Django recordings available, and if you want to hear that style of music played live live, I would think there's a "Hot Club Quintette" style group currently playing somewhere in almost every major city around the world...

Don't get lost in the crowd please Hank!!- get back on yer Strat! Even dear old Duane Eddy has a new album out lately I see, in his own individual style...!!

Well said, John, I couldn't have said it better myself !. However I will still buy it as I am a completist, much to the detriment of my Bank balance. I guess that it will be kept with those Polydor LP's and even some of Hank's other solo work, listened to once and put away perhaps for ever, but never to be parted with.

Hi Jim

not me I'm afraid the rhythm guitarist in our band in the 60's used play Django for months on end, couldn't stand it then and still can't and when he teamed up with Stephan Grapelli it was even worse in my books.

However I've just found a CD called Pulp Surf as the names suggests a compilation of Surf music there's an excellent track on there by Eddie Day ex(?) Lively Ones called Ultimate Wave, you can also find it on You Tube under Nice Surf Music, mind you there are some pretty odd ones as well, but over all worth the 6 quid I paid for it.

So to all you Django fans out there, sorry but on the bright side that'll be one more seat at Fairfield Halls and one more CD in stock.

By the way if you like Surf music look for Meshugga Beach Party, they have several CD's but again you can find them on You Tube.

Hank has often quoted Django as a influence and lets not forget other artist (e.g John Jorgenson) who have recorded in this style but are known for playing in a different style. At the time Hank was a mere lad this style of music along with big bands, vocals and some comedy records was all there was to listen too, rock as we know it only took off in 1955/56.

I was playing in a Django Reinhardt style band some twenty years ago.

I think jazz is an acquired taste, as they say..as are many other musical styles.

Which is why I like a lot of variety in music- I couldn't just listen to or play one style all the time.

My impossible dream was always not to have been a 'rock star' or a 'guitar hero' (urghh, what a horrible phrase) but to have been a session player- the exciting challenge of turning up at a studio and then playing whatever style is required !!
