Hello Peter!

Maybe Kim can post, too. It would be great to correspond with yet another female bassist. And please tell Charlotte our keyboardist is a woman also.

Peter, how did you come up with your band name? That's a wonderful logo.

Ciao,
Anna

Hi Rosemary!

You are actually braver than I am. Although I've been playing Shadows pieces just a little bit longer than you, I would be scared to play solo on YouTube.

Did you see the YouTube clip of our Madeline Cookie Company show?

By the way, you play wonderfully!

Regards,
Anna

Hi Rosemary,

Unfortunately I'm too far away in Manchester but my Uncle is a music teacher in Brisvegas, mostly school age but he teaches and conducts all age groups for various jazz and swing bands. I can ask him to put out some feelers to see if he knows any female Shadows fans in his bands and get them to come on here if you like?

BTW, your playing is great, you're way too hard on yourself! I wish I were brave enough to sit still in front of a camcorder, haha

All the best

Jayne

Please encourage Ariella to post on this thread. She is a bassist like me; maybe we could compare notes.

That's a nice guitar she's using. Andy says he thinks it's a Jaguar bass.

Hello Ariella!
Best wishes from Anna

Hi Anna,

I am not in close relationship with Ariella, I only meet her at our Shadows' meetings. I'll look to see if I have some video recordings of her playing.

Andy is right, Ariella's guitar is a Fender Jaguar Bass, she prefers it to the more usual Precision Bass.

Hi Rob, Anna, Didier and Jayne
Thanks again for all the replies which are very encouraging as there seem to be a lot more female players around than I'd thought. It's just such a shame we're so far away distance wise.

Rob, Anna and Jayne:
Thanks for your kind comments :) I started recording my practice sessions after a few months to see if I looked more or less like a normal guitarist and because on playback, other issues such as phrasing and timing become very obvious. I often upload recordings here on ShadowMusic and on Charlie Hall's website and have received fantastic advice and tips for problems which I'd still be struggling with otherwise as nobody else hears me play except for my husband and cats. :)

Also playing before a camera is a good way of judging how confident I am (or not) with a particular piece. Even tunes I know reasonably well I can only play through without (big) mistakes about one in ten times and the slightest difference in the tremolo bar, the light or anything different throws me out a lot so I know it will be a long time before I'd be able to perform. When I can play something through in front of the camera on both my Strats one after another without mistakes 9 out of 10 times I'd say I might be able to try performing at a Shadows Club (but the only problem is we don't have one here but you never know, I might try to start one some day) :)

Oh, and yes I saw the Madeleine Cookie Company YouTube and enjoyed it very much. :)

Best wishes
Rosemary

Hi Anna,
Life Story is a Shadows album from (I think) 2004 and as our band is made up of all family members, myself, my wife Kim and daughter Charlotte, my brother Paul and his son Dave, We thought the name was rather suitable.
I'll ask Kim to get in touch, but she's not usually one for forums.

Take care

You can see (and almost hear) Ariella playing here : http://www.4shared.com/video/txJnUBjZ/K ... onimo.html . Keep in mind that this is an improvised band with people who never played together before (an usual "game" at our meetings).

Hi Didier
Thanks very much for posting that video. I really enjoyed it and Ariella looks very comfortable there on bass with the band. It looks like a lot of fun and they all played very well considering they weren't used to playing together.
Best wishes

I cringe when I watch videos of me playing, Rosemary. I see and hear so many mistakes! But I agree it's a good way to learn. You're doing a lot better than I did after a year of playing (and I haven't progressed much since then, unfortunately!).

That was great video, Didier. It's wonderful to see how Shadows fans jam in France. That looks like a Gibson J200 on the stand; someone was playing rhythm the way Brice did in the studio!

Anna, sorting my files, I found this candid photo of you at the studio shoot for the Madeleine Cookie Company shows. And of your "Hank Marvin" Precision Bass, which the Shadows should have, but never, used! That's Yojee, one of the company singers, kibitzing.

She wasn't so comfortable the first time she played at one of our meetings, but she improved a lot with time, which confirms that only practice helps !

Improvising bands is a regular feature at our meetings, it's mainly intended to provide the opportunity to play in a band for those who have not found people in their area to form a band.
